What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Outreach and Volunteer Coordinator position at Family Promise of Greater Orlando?
Job Summary:
To provide organization, implementation, and logistical coordination of the emergency/rotational shelter program. This is highly responsible, professional work that requires the coordination of the various components of the Family Promise emergency/rotational shelter program. The Shelter and Community Outreach Specialist must work collaboratively with the Program Manager and Shelter Case Manager, as well as other Family Promise team members. The Outreach Specialist will also work collaboratively with congregation and community site staff, board members, volunteers, other supporters, and program participants that represent diverse communities and backgrounds. This work is performed with a high degree of independence under the supervision of the Program Manager for Shelter and Stabilization.
Responsibilities:
Community Outreach
· Increase public awareness of Family Promise in the community by engaging faith-based congregations, schools, and other community groups through volunteerism partnerships.
- Cultivate relationships with leaders, outreach committees, and members of faith communities.
· Create and maintain relationships with businesses and service providers to advocate and connect families with resources that will enhance their experience in the shelter program and community while in the program and beyond.
· Represent Family Promise of Greater Orlando at community events and promote the services provided by the agency.
Congregational Recruitment & Network Support
- Recruit faith partners, business partners, and other community organizations to participate in the rotational shelter program.
- Hold quarterly meetings with all volunteer coordinators from the host sites/congregations.
- Actively serve as point person for all congregation and community sites, maintaining frequent contact with volunteer coordinators to inform them of guests’ schedules, dietary needs, or any other pertinent information needed to provide congregational shelter services.
· Contact the volunteer coordinator(s) during each host week to monitor guest comportment.
Volunteer Management
· Create and maintain volunteer job descriptions.
· Recruit and manage shelter program volunteers.
- Create and maintain volunteer training opportunities that keep Family Promise in compliance with policies, laws, and contract requirements. This includes volunteer background screening.
- Communicate appreciation to volunteers for their service through regular correspondence and recognition events.
- Submit a monthly report to the Executive Director on the progress made regarding the goals and outcomes of the position as well as volunteer tracking for the month, volunteer training completed, volunteer time, and volunteer survey summaries.
- Maintain yearly shelter schedule for host sites and maintain volunteer scheduling when families are housed at the day/resource center, including independent contractors for overnight hosting. Work with Program Manager to ensure coverage.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Perform related work as requested by the Executive Director and/or Program Manager.
- Work collaboratively with the Program Managers, Development Manager and Business Manager to assure timely reporting for all shelter grant requirements.
- Maintain and record activities performed with or on behalf of a guest family via Family Promise case notes. Enter all case notes and service transactions into HMIS within 72 hours and keep current with the requirements necessary to stay in compliance with the HMIS database program.
- The job requires working some evenings, weekends and holidays as the shelter program operates 365 days a year including the need for overnight volunteer or private contractor coverage.
Competencies and Skills:
- Four-year BSW or related degree required.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in direct service/administration role related to housing, shelter, or family services, nonprofit organization management, or volunteer/staff recruitment, development, and training preferred.
- Supervisory experience preferred.
- Effective and transparent team member with strong delegation, critical thinking, problem-solving, and planning skills.
- Demonstrated experience building effective business relationships to promote mission and service.
- An understanding of the broader community, its goals and the political environment related to homelessness is needed for this position.
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills, with demonstrated ability to create and deliver public presentations.
- Must have strong project-management skills. Must be detail oriented and able to execute projects in a fast-paced, often pressured environment.
- Needs to be familiar and comfortable working in a variety of faith-based environments.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and volunteer management software.
- Occasional lifting of materials of up to 50 pounds may be necessary.
- Must have own vehicle to travel to community events, community organizations, and congregations.
- All potential candidates must pass a background check, a drug screen, and possess a valid Florida driver’s license.

Pay: $21.63 - $26.44 per hour
