Overview
The Part-Time Bilingual Program Assistant will support early literacy initiatives by conducting home visits with Spanish-speaking families, modeling effective reading strategies, and providing guidance on pre-literacy skills. The role includes assisting with intake interviews, maintaining communication with families, and collecting data for reports. Responsibilities also involve translating materials, providing interpretation services, participating in training sessions, supporting volunteer mentors, and attending community events. The position requires strong bilingual communication skills, experience in early childhood education or related fields, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. The role is partially remote, with occasional in-person meetings, events, and home visits within Orange County.
Responsibilities:
Early Literacy Home Visitor & Family Support
- Conduct home visits to Spanish speaking families, providing guidance and support on shared reading techniques and other pre-literacy skills.
- Model effective literacy and reading strategies for parents and caregivers, promoting a love for reading and learning in young children.
- Assist in the program referral process by conducting intake interviews with potential program participants.
- Maintain regular communication with enrolled families as needed to provide support, answer questions, share resources, and collect data for reports, including surveys and demographic information.
Training and Development
- Participate in ongoing training sessions to stay updated on best practices in early literacy and education.
- Assist program director in training volunteer Early Literacy Mentors as needed.
Event Participation
- Attend community and organization-sponsored events as needed to promote early literacy initiatives and engage with families.
- Provide group or site sessions for Spanish speaking families.
Translation and Interpretation
- Translate materials into Spanish to ensure accessibility for Spanish-speaking families.
- Provide interpretation services during meetings and events as needed.
Recordkeeping
- Maintain accurate records of family visits, interactions, and progress.
- Ensure all documentation is up-to-date and submitted in a timely manner.
Program Support
- Assist the Program Director with various programmatic tasks, including planning, coordination, and implementation of programs as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bilingual in Spanish and English, with strong verbal and written communication skills in both languages.
- Experience working in early childhood education, social work, literacy programs, or related fields.
- Ability to engage and connect with young children and their families.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of early literacy development and best practices.
- Experience working with diverse communities and understanding cultural sensitivities.
- Proficiency in using digital tools for communication and record-keeping.
