Direct Support Professional (DSP) Position:

We have several clients (mostly children aged 2-18) who are in need of talented, kind and understanding caregivers who can work with them on a regular basis providing both in-home and community-based support.  We are looking for people who are caring, professional and organized, with prior client care or relevant experience.  This role involves assisting a client on an individual basis as well as taking them out into the community to learn skills and socialize. The DSP works alongside the Support Manager here at Family Relief Resources to ensure the client is receiving the person-centered care and attention they need.

1E0171G

Location: SW Portland 97219, near Lewis & Clark College

Schedule: Full weekend days (either 8-4 or 9-5).

This 16-year-old client (they/them) needs someone to give support as needed with regulation through some emotional states that can result in outbursts of anger and anxiety. They’re very into history and will talk at length with DSPs about obscure topics, some of which make other people uncomfortable (misplaced sense of humor), but they can adjust when the DSP says they aren’t comfortable with certain topics. The family is flexible on scheduling depending on the DSP’s availability. They want a provider who has good chemistry with the client. DSP needs to be vaccinated. Primary need is weekends, but additionally having occasional/as needed weekday help (after school) would be good, too.

A day in the life of a DSP:

The DSP is an important member of the care team and is responsible for working directly with the client to achieve their desired outcomes and goals.  The DSP is also responsible for writing daily notes of what was worked on each day and any progress that was made, and completing quarterly progress reports that are vital to the ongoing development of the client’s yearly care plan (ISP). Each client is different, and their needs are varied, but care generally involves working with the client in their home and/or community, by helping them to achieve various tasks commonly referred to as ADLs or IADLs (washing hands, getting dressed, completing chores, self-managing behaviors/anxieties/emotions, etc.).

Daily Requirements:

  • Scheduling – each DSP has a set schedule with the assigned client(s)
  • Smart phone – use a cell phone to clock in/out for visits and complete the daily progress notes.
  • Patient, Kind and Positive – caring for clients with disabilities requires someone who can be patient, support the client through kindness and understanding, and provide positive reinforcement throughout the shift.
  • Driving – depending on the client, they may need to be driven to community events or appointments.  Valid license and insurance required if driving will be needed.
  • Support – develop and maintain positive working relationships with the assigned client(s), their families and the FRR Support Manager

Job Qualifications:

  • An interest and desire to work within the intellectually and developmentally disabled community. (prior experience as a caregiver preferred)
  • Self-directed and organized with ability to work as a part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner, both written and verbal, to parents, family members and the care team.
  • Ability to write daily notes related to the care provided to the client, and complete quarterly progress reports.
  • This position is In-Home Care. Must have reliable transportation to and from scheduled shifts.

  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Able to complete 6 hours of pre-start training (paid) and become CPR and MAR certified within a few weeks of hire
  • Comfortable using technology such as cell phones and computers

  • Be willing to monitor and respond to messages/calls from FRR regarding important information and updates.

  • Paid sick time and holiday pay
  • Vacation time (available after 6 months)
  • Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance
