SUMMARY
Family Service League is seeking a per-diem Advocate for a homeless shelter in Huntington, NY. The Advocate will be responsible for conducting client assessments and ultimately assisting clients in achieving self- sufficiency through advocacy, counseling, and resource referrals.
**$1,500 Sign-On Bonus!**
RESPONSIBILITIES
- The Advocate will use good judgement and remain calm in high stress situations.
- Handle special projects.
- Conduct intakes for new clients.
- Provide ongoing support and counseling for clients in reaching their goals.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships.
- Work cooperatively, help set goals, resolve problems and that enhance the program.
- Provide conflict resolution strategies.
- Conduct regular perimeter checks for safety.
- The Advocate will issue violations for breaking rules.
- Open locker and sheds for clients to access their belongings.
- Oversee and document clients while they self-administer medication.
- Serve Meals.
- The Advocate will supervise bedtime, distribute bed rolls, linens placed in appropriate bin for laundry service.
- Routine bed and bathroom check and document log for safety.
- Access donation closet for clothing as needed.
- Oversee shower times and distribute toiletries as needed.
- Report and document all incidents with detail and accuracy.
- Transport clients as needed.
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
At least 1 year of experience in human services is preferred.
Prior experience working in a homeless shelter preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills required.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office required.
Valid and clean New York State Driver’s License required.
Flexibility to work mornings, evenings, overnight, or weekends.
Flexibility to work at different sites is preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Sitting and standing for extended periods of time, as well as moderate lifting.
Must be able to stay awake overnight if assigned to an overnight shift.
