Family Service League is seeking a per-diem Advocate for a homeless shelter in Port Jefferson Station. The Advocate will report to the Assistant Director and will be responsible for conducting client assessments, linking clients with community-based service resources, assisting clients in achieving self-sufficiency through advocacy, assisting with resource referrals, and assisting clients with various tasks in the shelter.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the clients and their needs while on shift, as well as enforcing the rules set forth by the shelter and the county.
- Complete Quick Intakes as new clients move into the shelter.
- Complete Daily Tasks Check Lists (signature forms, chores sheets etc.).
- Turn over rooms for new clients as clients are periodically discharged from the shelter.
- Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problem, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.
- Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of self-sufficiency and the organization.
- Negotiate conflict between clients if the occasion arises.
- Build productive relationships with clients and ensure proper boundaries.
- Conduct perimeter checks for safety.
- Ensure appropriate communication with other team members.
- Transport clients in vans as needed and upon Program Director approval.
- Ensure client safety and provide crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques as needed.
- Follow Supervisor’s direction on all client and program matters and handle special projects as assigned.
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor's degree preferred.
Prior experience in Human Service preferred.
Prior experience working in a homeless shelter preferred.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills required.
Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office required.
Valid and clean New York State Driver’s License required.
Flexibility to work mornings, evenings, overnight, or weekends.
Flexibility to work at different sites is preferred.
