Family Service League, a leading social services agency, is seeking a per-diem Advocate for a homeless shelter in Brentwood, NY.
About the Role
The Advocate will play a vital role in supporting individuals experiencing homelessness by conducting client intakes, curfew checks, safety checks, and providing transportation. The successful candidate will be responsible for crisis intervention, ensuring compliance with shelter rules, and monitoring for safety throughout the facility.
Responsibilities
- Complete new client intakes and explain shelter rules and regulations
- Conduct regular curfew checks, including outdoor walks to each unit
- Perform safety checks and address any potential hazards
- Monitor the overall safety of the property and address any issues that arise
- Assist with pantry distribution and donations
- Provide transportation as needed
- Offer crisis intervention and support to clients
- Oversee compliance with shelter rules, regulations, and policies
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA protocols
- Collaborate with security to resolve client incidents
- Stay up-to-date with policy and procedure manuals and respond to daily emails
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 1 year of experience in Human Services or related field preferred
- Knowledge of DSS policies and regulations, as well as the homeless population
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and bilingualism in Spanish (preferred)
- Valid and clean NYS Driver's License required
Physical Requirements
- Able to go up and down stairs
Compensation details: 18.5 hourly wage
