The Health Information Technician (HIT) position functions as a member of the Health Information Management (HIM) team. The HIT plays a critical role in providing electronic health record support to the Behavioral Health department and is a key partner in the onboarding process. This position is also tasked with supporting the data analytics functions of the HIM team and Compliance.

Position Requirements:
- Degree, certification or concentration in information management, research/analytics, health administration, or other related sciences
- Minimum two (2) years in data analytics and/or health information management
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Excel required
- Strong background with Electronic Health Records (EHR)

Position Responsibilities:
Health Information Management
- Serve as a member of the Health Information Management (HIM) team
- Maintain client confidentiality and security of health information in compliance with HIPAA and other pertinent Corporate Compliance regulations
- Produce regular reports from EHR at scheduled intervals and distribute them to Behavioral Health Centers and/or other key stakeholders
- Collection, reporting and analysis of health information data as requested
- Auditing of compliance risk areas
- Act as lead for EHR support helpdesk, assisting end users with all facets of the EHR, coordinating with Health Information Analyst (HIA) or ADHIM for additional support
- Collaborate with the billing team for ongoing coordination of support
- Work in partnership with department supervisors or other program staff to resolve inaccuracies, errors and problem solve
- Test EHR upgrades regularly and document results
- Manage the onboarding and offboarding processes in conjunction with Human Resources and IT
- Create EHR profiles for Behavioral Health staff and manage access controls.
- Manage Electronic Prescribing of Controlled Substances (EPCS) tokens and authentication
- Create training materials and provide general EHR training to new hires during onboarding
- Develop procedures for the department EHR manual and guides for utilizing the EHR
- Other duties as assigned
- Participates in organization-wide and organization-appointed committees in order to facilitate organization program initiatives and services to the community
- Responds supportively to changes in programs and policies and taking a broad view of one’s position by assuming additional responsibilities when the need arises
- Review, post and fully reconcile insurance and client payments through 835 file upload and manual entry including all necessary accounting functions
- Communicate the application of reconciled payments to the accounting information system
- Re-bill claims as needed and bill all payers in waterfall process
- Manage insurance denials, identify trends, reporting and communicating with appropriate staff
- Complete all levels of appeals adhering to the payer specific appeal requirements
- Respond to insurance requests for information including refunds, medical records, provider and client data
- Examines claims, charges and payments for compliance with agency, insurance and regulatory requirements
- Provide reporting on denials, unpaid accounts, payments and any issues impacting revenue
- Perform general billing duties including but not limited to: reconciling billed services; remittance processing, insurance denial follow up, collections and communicate billing and insurance issues to appropriate staff
- Technology proficiency (Windows, Microsoft Office).
- Experience with Netsmart EHR system is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules.
- Understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance regulations a strong plus
- Knowledge of relevant healthcare regulations, ideally NYS Office of Mental Health
