Certified Peer Support Specialist Job Description

The Peer Support Specialist must be an individual who lives with a psychiatric diagnosis and/or addiction and has demonstrated at least two years of commitment to his/her own personal recovery. This position provides a variety of recovery-oriented services to individuals who have self-identified as desiring peer supports, in order to promote greater independence, community integration and recovery from mental illness and/or substance abuse.
Services provided by peer specialists include a wide range of supports, services, and advocacy that contribute to a client's ability to engage in ongoing treatment. Assist in the development of peer-led programming.
Must be a self-identified person on the application or cover letter how they have “lived” personal experience leading to an understanding of the needs of persons with mental health & substance abuse issues. Must be in recovery from a psychiatric diagnosis and/or substance use disorder, who meets the abstinence requirements for recovery staff in alcohol and other drug treatment programs.

Duties/Responsibilities: :The Peer Support Specialist will provide social and emotional support, advocacy, and consumer information to the adult mental health population. These activities are planned and implemented through a partnership between the participant and the treatment team members. These activities are provided to support the consumer to live their own lives and to direct their own recovery and wellness process. All other duties outlined in current job description.

Skills/Knowledge: History of lived experience with mental health-related difficulties; attend and complete Peer Support Training; have an understanding of the recovery process and how to utilize that process to help others.

  • Leads enrichment activities such as guided meditation
  • Leads skills training and educational groups such as AA Big Book studies, Recovery activities, and relapse prevention
  • Attends & monitors enrichment activities with outside vendors, including yoga & improvisational comedy
  • Leads community meetings to discuss various aspects of treatment & to resolve potential conflicts between patients
  • Delivers lectures to patients about topics pertinent to recovery from pre-selected topics and speech outlines; contributes material to these speeches to improve them over time
  • Attends & supervises trips to off-campus 12-step recovery meetings daily
  • Monitors patients at all times, diffuses conflicts, ensures patient compliance with treatment protocol, and involves other clinical staff as necessary
  • Works as a highly dependable, independent member of the treatment team*

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Must be committed to drug-free lifestyle and responsible alcohol use
  • Candidate must be able to explain personal passion or interest in substance abuse issues
  • Able to be outgoing and engaging with challenging patient population
  • Must be comfortable speaking to large groups of people
  • Committed team player willing to learn new skill sets
  • 1 year prior experience working with Substance Abuse populations strongly preferred
  • Crisis Intervention Training strongly preferred
  • Personal interest or experience in fitness preferred
  • Valid drivers license
  • Agrees to background check
