    Position Purpose: Under the direction of the Principal, the Assistant Principal serves as an instructional leader in the planning, coordination, and administration of school activities and programs, including curriculum, instruction, assessment, student conduct and attendance, and co-curricular programs, school plant operations, and the supervision and evaluation of assigned personnel.

    Responsibilities
    1. Instructional Leadership: Assists the Principal in providing instructional leadership to the school. Performs a variety of administrative duties to assist the Principal in managing the school; assumes the duties of the Principal or Assistant Principal in the absence of the Principal and as assigned.

    Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 30%

    Examples of this work include:
    • Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school and fosters good interpersonal relations among students and staff.
    • Supervises students on campus before, during, and after school; monitors students during lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines.
    • Provides direction to a variety of faculty, staff, and student programs and services; participates in formal and informal classroom visitations and observations; provides recommendations and suggestions for improvement as appropriate.

    2. Student Management: Develops and implements appropriate procedures for the discipline, attendance, health, safety, and equity of the children assigned to the school.

    Examples of this work include:
    • Implements and supports district equity and inclusion initiatives for all students
    • Recommends and advocates for revisions to the site’s continuous improvement plan to ensure equity and inclusion for all students through the monitoring and analyzing of data.
    • Monthly monitoring of the assigned school’s discipline data.
    • Annual monitoring of the school’s BoQ (Benchmarks of Quality)
    • Monitoring of building Equity Audits under the direction of the Director of Equity and Inclusion
    • Participates in training to lead Equity and Inclusion exercises for building level staff
    • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with district policies and state laws; receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints; serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
    • Assume responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board Policies and Regulations by the school’s staff and students.
    • Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings and Student Study Teams.
    • Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of intervention programs that address the needs of at-risk students.

    3. Supervisory Responsibilities: Carries out supervisory responsibilities given to him/her by the principal in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

    Priority: Essential | Percent of Time: 30%

    Examples of this work include:
    • Carries out supervisory responsibilities given to him/her by the principal in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees and students; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
    • Conducts fire and other emergency drills in accordance with state and local regulations.
    • Exert leadership ensuring the effective implementation of the district-adopted curriculum.

    4. Professional Development: Continuously develop knowledge of current research and theory in specific field.

    Priority: Secondary | Percent of Time: 10%

    Examples of this work include:
    • Participates in all mandatory training or training appropriate to the position as required by the district.
    • Performs special assignments and other duties as determined by the principal and/or associate superintendent.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    Minimum Qualifications
    Master’s degree with a major in elementary education
    Be qualified to hold a North Dakota Elementary Principal’s Credential
    One of the following: valid Teaching License with an Elementary Endorsement; special course work related to Elementary education
    Minimum five years teaching and/or administrative experience

    Preferred Qualifications
    Experience determining fair consequences for students in violation per district student code of conduct guidelines
    Ability to interpret and analyze data
    Ability to make effective presentations
    Ability to interact effectively with a variety of audiences and individuals
