What You'll Do : As a Groundskeeper, you will assist with the maintenance of all grounds and parking areas at Farm Bureau's West Des Moines location. You will assist with the planting, edging, pruning, fertilizing, mulching and transplanting of flowers, shrubs, trees, and bushes on our property. You will also cut the grass using foot and rider type power mowers, and operate other equipment such as a seeder, sweeper and hand power tools. It is important that you understand the various types of fertilizers and chemicals, as you will operate liquid and powder applicators applying the proper amount during the appropriate season. During the winter months, you will be responsible for removing snow and debris from walkways.

Our core hours during the spring, summer and fall are Monday - Friday from 6am - 2 : 30pm with a rotating bi-weekly schedule of Monday and Friday from 5am - 1 : 30pm. Then the following week on Wednesday from 5am - 1 : 30pm to mow the parking lot areas before employee's arrive. You may work an occasional weekend as needed. Your schedule during the winter months is Monday - Friday from 6am- 2 : 30pm depending on snow and refreeze, and will be on call 24 / 7 during the winter months - so flexibility in your schedule is key.

What It Takes to Join Our Team :

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus at least 2 years of horticulture, groundskeeping and / or landscaping experience required.
  • Must have or attain a Certified Applicator license (3OT (Ornamental and Turf Pest)) and maintain Continuing Education Units (C.E.U.'s) to keep the Certified Applicators license current. License can be attained after hire with help from the company.
  • Must be able to work under all types of weather conditions (heat, rain, snow, etc).
  • Some lifting is required (up to 100 lbs.) and extensive time is spent walking, bending and reaching.
  • Knowledge of commercial lawn mowers and small engine equipment is preferred, as well as knowledge of irrigation systems.
