Are you a hands-on operations leader who thrives on learning every detail of a business, rolling up your sleeves to tackle challenges head-on, and leading by knowing from doing - and not delegation? Do you excel in scrappy, entrepreneurial environments where resourcefulness and grit are celebrated? If so, we’re looking for you to join our team as the Director of Operations at Farmgirl Flowers—a direct-to-consumer floral e-commerce brand redefining how we connect through flowers.
About Us
Farmgirl Flowers isn’t your typical floral company, and we’re not looking for a typical operations leader. As a bootstrapped brand, we’ve built our success on creativity, hard work, and a commitment to delivering joy to our customers while staying true to our values. If you’re ready to join a team that’s as passionate about flowers as it is about doing things the right way, this may be a great fit for you.
About the Role
The Director of Operations is a hands-on leader who thrives in the trenches while also keeping the big picture in focus. This isn’t solely a sit-behind-a-desk job—you’ll learn every part of our operation from farm to consumer and take ownership of making it better. From daily fulfillment to strategic growth planning, you’ll ensure every bouquet meets our high standards while building systems that allow us to scale efficiently without losing our scrappy edge.
Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the quality and timely delivery of every order. Along the way, you’ll implement processes and improvements, manage budgets, refine procedures to keep everything running smoothly and find solutions when they aren’t. Whether you’re working to identify and set up new farms or production partners, streamlining transportation processes, devising strategies to drive down COGS and operational costs, managing inventory, negotiating with vendors, or solving any other of the myriad of problems that arise within any operations department - you’ll approach every challenge with intellectual curiosity, positivity, common sense, and a sense of urgency.
What You’ll Do
- Own the Operation : Dive into every aspect of our process, from sourcing to shipping, to fully understand the life cycle of our products—from forecasting and design to procurement and sourcing, then on to the farms growing the flowers, the product partners designing them, the shipping and delivery partners, and ultimately to our customer’s door. Your mission is to learn exactly how the “doughnuts” get made, ensuring the operation runs as smoothly as possible while continually refining and improving processes to make it even better.
- Leading by Doing : Whether it’s packing orders, troubleshooting logistics, or implementing improvements, you’ll roll up your sleeves and dive in alongside the team.
- Solve Problems : One of the key responsibilities of this role is solving problems efficiently and effectively, relying on both common sense and sound judgment. You’ll understand that operations isn’t a typical 9-to-5 job and will embrace the challenge of addressing urgent issues in real time, while proactively creating solutions to prevent them from happening again.
- Streamline Processes : Develop and document scalable procedures for all areas of the operation, including production, inventory management, and fulfillment.
- Drive Results : Ensure exceptional quality and on-time delivery for as many orders as humanly possible, meeting or exceeding KPIs in transportation, customer support, inventory, and production.
- Optimize Transportation : Manage inbound and outbound transportation contracts and costs while creating and maintaining performance and cost reports.
- Inventory and Waste Oversight : Develop systems for accurate inventory tracking, cycle counts, and cost control for perishable and nonperishable materials.
- Customer Support Alignment : Partner with the Customer Support team to ensure timely communication and resolution of delivery issues.
- Collaborate Across Teams : Work closely with the Product Team to translate creative visions into operational reality, ensuring margins and quality standards are met.
- Relationship Management : Build strong relationships with farm and fulfillment partners through up to 20% domestic and international travel.
- Whatever It Takes : At Farmgirl, every team member is expected to step up and do whatever it takes to get the job done, even if it falls outside the boundaries of their official job description. During peak flower holidays (and beyond), the entire team works together to ensure success—whether it’s processing flowers, making and shipping bouquets, answering customer emails and calls, or tackling any other task that comes our way. And we do it all with a positive, can-do attitude!
