Professional Tutors provide high-quality tutoring to multilingual learners for the Writing Center. The ideal Professional Tutor is friendly and approachable, responsible and reliable, organized and efficient, and can work with a diverse student body while always maintaining a professional demeanor. This position requires an understanding of and demonstrated experience with best practices and theories related to tutoring.
Under the supervision of the Director of the Writing Center, the incumbent will provide on-campus and remote tutoring; participate in, and assist with facilitating, Writing Center workshops and events. The Professional Tutor will advocate for and uphold the educational mission of the college.
The ideal candidate should also have solid interpersonal communication skills combined with a genuine desire to assist students. Professional Tutors work directly with students to assist them at every stage of the writing process and includes supporting students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. The Professional Tutor may also tutor writing in other classes, help with special tutoring-related projects, or other duties as assigned by the Director.
Availability to work weekends or evenings as needed to meet operational requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Earned Bachelor's degree by May 2025 in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a related subject such as Psychology, Linguistics, Literacy, or Education.
- Minimum of one academic year of experience. Graduate research in areas pertaining to multilingual education, rhetoric and composition, linguistics, literacy, higher education, and English will be considered along with students who have completed observations and student teaching.
- Ability to teach learning, reading, speaking, and writing strategies to students.
- Understanding of and demonstrated experience with best practices and theories related to tutoring diverse learners.
- Experience with programming and events.
- Knowledge of major citation styles: APA, Chicago, and MLA.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Concern for student needs in a demanding academic context as well as flexibility, patience, and professional integrity.
- Knowledge, experience, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
- Enthusiasm for teaching English language skills and a genuine desire to assist students.
- Received, or currently pursuing, a Master's degree.
- Two years of experience providing tutoring or the delivery of instruction to multilingual learners.
- Previous experience teaching or creating and facilitating workshops.
- Multilingual or working proficiency of a language other than English.
This is a Part-Time, Temporary UUP position.
- SALARY: $20/hour. Salary may increase commensurate with experience.
