Position Overview: The Veterinarian Assistant/Technician is a full time position that reports directly to the Medical Team Leader. The position consists of responsibilities that are critical to the wellbeing of the temporary residents of the shelter. As the Veterinarian Assistant/Technician you will need to be able to multitask to handle the various responsibilities throughout the day. Responsibilities include: Being the point of contact for shelter staff to bring animal medical concerns, understanding and utilizing medical protocols to ensure a healthy shelter population, bringing medical concerns to Medical Team Leader and doctors. This position serves as a liaison for information coming from the staff and volunteers to be communicated to the Medical Team Leader and doctors. A strong sense of organization and a keen mind are necessary to excel in this position.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Completion of daily standard operating procedures pertaining to quality animal care.
- Working with customers through adoption counseling for medical issues.
- Weekly medical inventory and supply ordering.
- Use of software databases to accurately track and report animal medical treatments.
- Administering vaccines and daily medications to shelter animals.
- Drawing blood from animals for routine testing.
- Assisting doctors in examination of shelter animals.
- Recording doctor’s medical plans as instructed.
- Recording treatments given in animal’s folders and in the internet based Animal Shelter Manager program.
Skills and Experience:
- Must possess a want for cleanliness and tidiness.
- Experience in dog and cat handling and restraint techniques.
- Experience in animal shelter medicine preferred.
- Experience with shelter software preferred.
- Must have a strong organizational ability, accuracy and pay close attention to detail.
- Experience with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred.
- Ability to take initiative, set self-goals, and work independently.
- Ability to handle confidential information.
- The want and drive to learn and progress in the field.
- Outgoing, personable, and willing to initiate and maintain a conversation with new people.
- Energetic, creative, and can work proficiently as a member of a team.
Work Environment:
- Will work closely with all FJAH team members.
- Must be able to lift 50lbs.
- There will be frequent exposure to animals.
- Typically, normal work hours but there will be evenings and weekends required.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $13.00 - $15.00 per hour
