Vertical Milling Supervisor Position Summary:
The Vertical Milling Supervisor plays a critical role in leading a team of vertical CNC machinists to ensure high-quality production and on-time delivery in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. This role demands proficiency in MDI (Manual Data Input) programming, CNC milling setup and operation, manual inspection techniques, and GD&T interpretation. The Supervisor will be responsible for providing technical guidance on machining strategies, troubleshooting issues related to vertical milling, and driving a culture of continuous improvement throughout the department.
By collaborating with cross-functional teams and facilitating clear communication across shifts, the Vertical Milling Supervisor ensures that all manufactured parts meet both Dahlquist Machine by Fathom’s rigorous quality standards and those of our customers. This position requires strong problem-solving skills, the ability to make critical decisions under pressure, and a commitment to maintaining a safe work environment. Additionally, the Supervisor will oversee day-to-day operations—managing Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost—while upholding company EH&S policies, supporting ongoing process improvements, and ensuring the facility is properly secured when needed. Through expert leadership and deep machining knowledge, the Vertical Milling Supervisor enhances product quality, empowers team members, and propels the organization’s growth in alignment with Fathom’s on-demand manufacturing capabilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a team of vertical machinists
- Solve problems related to vertical milling
- MDI (Manual Data Input) programming
- Utilize inspection equipment and procedures to ensure parts are produced per specifications
- Setup and operation of CNC Milling machines
- Inspection using manual gauges and instruments
- Understanding of GD&T and ability to read 2-D drawings
- Aid machinists in monitoring and inspecting parts throughout the machining process
- Observe all company quality and safety procedures
- Program parts using Gibbs
- Communicate and collaborate with team members in sharing information between first and second shift
- Shut down and lock up facility when done if needed
- Foster a safe working environment to ensure compliance with the business’s EH&S programs, and proactively address safety issues.
- Drive the cultural change and discipline necessary to create and sustain a successful continuous improvement culture.
- Responsible for day-to-day operational performance: Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost and all associated standard work.
Quality Inspector Qualifications/Requirements:
- 5–10 years of CNC milling experience in a job shop or high-mix environment
- Supervisory experience leading teams, setting schedules, and driving performance
- Skilled in interpreting engineering drawings, including GD&T
- Proficiency in MDI programming and Gibbs; basic machine setup troubleshooting
- Experience with manual inspection tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges)
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with machinists and other teams
- Ability to work independently and make decisions under pressure
- Familiarity with EH&S programs and a commitment to workplace safety
- Technical certification or associate degree preferred; CAD experience beneficial
- Knowledge of both metric and imperial measurement systems
- Commitment to continuous improvement and lean manufacturing principles
Hours: 5:45a.m. - 3:45 p.m. Monday - Thursday
