Principal Motion Systems Engineer (m/f/d)

JOB SUMMARY:

The Principal Motion Systems Engineer (PMSE) is a senior or expert level technical sales position operating regionally, and in partnership with territory-based Account Managers (AM).  The Principal MSE is responsible for working in partnership with each territory-based AM to develop qualified motion system opportunities at tiered OEM accounts.  The MSE is responsible for developing technical strategies used to acquire, maintain, and improve existing business, jointly responsible customer relationships at those accounts, and serving as the expert level technical point of contact between those customers, FMO and other FAULHABER Group company experts. To be successful in this role, the MSE must function as a competent sales engineer to provide customers with expert level application engineering assistance and technical support for all FAULHABER products and engineered motion system solutions.

GENERAL SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to develop new contacts and relationships at OEM accounts, communicate company’s capabilities, identify and qualify new opportunities based on company’s business model, assessment of customer needs, influence and manage customer’s product development process, apply application engineering and/or design engineering expertise to develop custom motion system solutions, manage opportunity and project scope, schedules and deliverables, develop effective quotation strategies, negotiate pricing, customer’s technical requirements and agreements.  Additional required skills include problem analysis, coaching, team building, people skills, leadership, organizational and time management skills, empathy and sensitivity, procedural planning, honesty and trust, computer, written and verbal communication proficiency.





TECHNICAL SKILL SET:


This is a customer facing, expert level, technical sales, and leadership position. Successful sizing, design, application, and integration of a complete Motion System requires an advanced interdisciplinary engineering and physics skill set, together with an expert knowledge of motion system design techniques and best manufacturing practices. FAULHABER understands that each successful candidate will have a varying and unique mix of the critical skill set required for success, typical, but not all inclusive:

  • Fundamental Expertise in Control Theory
  • Advanced understanding of signal processing, filtering, FFT and estimation techniques.
  • Advanced technical understanding of all motor Types; DC Brush, PMSM, Stepper …
  • Ability to model and tune control system behavior using MATLAB/SIMULINK
  • Ability to Code using Python, C/C , Basic, Visual Basic …
  • Understanding of real-time programming techniques and principals as they pertain to motion system design.
  • Ability to Code in IEC61131-3 based environments (i.e., CODESYS, TWINCAT, PLCopen, etc.)
  • Expert working knowledge of industrial Network Protocols including CANopen, EtherCAT, RS232, USB, and sensor peripheral interfaces; BiSS, SSI, SPI, etc. 
  • Advanced understanding of hardware & software embedded design of microprocessor-based control systems
  • Understanding and working knowledge of Windows, Linux and operation of Realtime operating systems
  • Expert working knowledge in the application Multiphysics Finite Element Analysis techniques as they pertain to Static, Dynamic and Thermal modeling in Motion System Design
  • Ability to generate and manipulate 3D CAD Models for the purpose of presentation and conceptual proposals
  • Understanding of Electrical design including power management, distribution, cabling, EMC and EMI.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Low Voltage, Machine and Functional Safety standards
  • Understanding and working knowledge of Quality Standards, ISO9001, ISO13485
  • System level critical thinking skills with understanding of Root Cause Analysis and 8D reporting
  • Understanding of Risk analysis
  • Ability to identify and propose unique technical USPs at they pertain to optimization in the design and manufacturing of complete Motion Systems

PROFESSIONAL SOFT SKILLS: 

  • Ability to read a room to identify key steak holders, gate keepers and decision makers, both technical and commercial.
  • Knowing when to talk and when to listen.
  • Ability to communicate technical ideas and knowledge concisely, effectively, creatively, inspirationally, and respectfully, especially when collaborating with non-technical people.
  • Ability to work “Hands On” directly with customers in field environments to collaboratively solve technical problems, analyze system behavior, tune control loops and provide expert training.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Work with Account Managers to exceed territory sales goal at pricing and profit levels approved by management.
  • A minimum of 5 to 8 days of business travel and customer visits per month in the regional assigned territory. Requirement excludes travel time to/from assigned territory.
  • Promptly Engage with AMs when qualified opportunities are identified (i.e. follow up on priority leads for Motion Systems)
  • Develop qualified OEM (original equipment manufacturer) accounts for FAULHABER engineered motion systems.
  • Develop strategies which maintain and improve existing business and customer relationships with the goal of becoming customer’s preferred motion system design “partner”.
  • Provide customers with expert level application engineering assistance and technical support for all FAULHABER product and engineered motion system solutions.
  • Develop an in-depth working knowledge of FAULHABER product as well as those of the competition.  Develop new applications for FAULHABER product by understanding their fit and function when operating as a “Motion System” in relation to the customer’s needs.
  • Document, communicate, coordinate, and manage scope, milestones, schedules, deliverables and meeting minutes for all qualified opportunities and projects during each phase of the customer’s product development process. Includes all project information and requirements communicated between customer’s engineering & supply chain team, FMO and other FAULHABER Group companies.  Participate in project management meetings with engineering team for all projects in assigned territory.
  • Support Account Manager to maintain accurate CRM system records for leads, accounts, quotations, opportunities, customer requirements and other records as required.
  • Provide guidance and support to Inside Sales Engineers and Customer Service Representatives to help them manage small OEM and Non-OEM accounts for which they have primary responsibility.
  • Prepare, submit and update in a timely manner all expense reports, sales call / trip reports, and other reports as required.
  • Work with Account Manger to prepare, review and negotiate special pricing, customer requirements and customer agreements with support from management and other departments as required.
  • Work with Account Manger to document, coordinate and manage all customer communication regarding pricing, requirements, quality and delivery concerns and agreements by interfacing with management and operations teams (engineering, purchasing, quality, logistics, finance, manufacturing, etc.) at FMO and FAULHABER Group companies as required. 
  • Work with Account Manger to technically manage RMA process on key OEM accounts and all communications between customer, FMO and other FAULHABER Group companies and prepare reports on findings, corrective action plans and delivery recovery plans. Support analysis process as required.
  • Provide feedback to Marketing Department concerning customer applications, lead follow-up results and general market conditions.




  • Minimum of 10 years OEM account technical management experience is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of electrical or mechatronic engineering experience is required. Sales engineering or application engineering experience with OEM customers is acceptable and preferred.
  • Master’s degree in physics, electrical, mechanical or systems (mechatronic) engineering, or 15 years equivalent engineering or entrepreneurial experience in the application and/or design of motion systems is required.  Equivalent experience will include a combination of sales engineering and application engineering experience.  Application experience in FAULHABER specified markets for motion systems is preferred.
  • Ability to travel routinely to any assigned territory in North America is required.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and specifications with an expert level understanding of the definition and application of various electrical, mechanical, dimensional, and environmental specifications is required.
  • Ability to work and self-manage with minimal additional supervision.
  • Sales and Engineering experience with servo motors, stepper motors, gearheads, linear actuators, drives, and control products applied as a complete motion system is required.
  • Excellent execution, time management, verbal and written communication and computer skills.
