The Fauquier County Department of Community Development is seeking an experienced manager and leader to fill the position of Assistant Director of Community Development. Located in the Virginia Piedmont on the edge of the Washington, DC Metro area, the County is largely rural and conservation oriented. Fauquier has a long-established planning philosophy of managed growth and rural land preservation, which includes developing thriving service districts and promoting the surrounding lands for active agriculture. The County also seeks to preserve environmental and historic resources while encouraging economic development. Staff are therefore involved in a great variety of challenging issues. The Community Development Department has a staff of 42 hard-working, fun-loving talented people that handle numerous functions, including planning, zoning, building, environmental planning and oversight, engineering, transportation planning and historic preservation.
The ideal candidate is a self-directed creative problem-solver who enjoys building strong relationships. Flexibility and adaptability are important, as are a good sense of humor and approachable manner. The ideal candidate should have a proven track record for empowering staff and building and maintaining a culture that enables productive collaboration. The successful candidate will be a results-oriented, forward-thinking professional with keen strategic problem-solving skills and outstanding analytical and communication skills.
Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning or closely related field, with a Master’s degree and AICP certification preferred, and at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in planning and zoning. Knowledge of environmental, transportation and historic preservation planning is highly desired. A broad range of knowledge and experiences within local government is a plus.
Minimum starting salary is $96,000, with salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
