Supervise and teach participants proper techniques in a topic-specific class or event.
Provide overall operation and administration of a topic-specific instructional class or event which may include supervising volunteers, keeping accurate records of progress of participants, and planning and coordinating upcoming classes.
Create programs for diverse family cultures, respond to daily changing needs and environments.
Provide and maintain an efficient, well organized, and productive instructional class setting in order to enhance the participant's leisure skills, thereby improving his/her quality of life.
Attends required training programs.
Plans and prepares lessons to instruct classes for infants, toddlers, youth, teens, and/or adults.
Maintains discipline in class setting.
Supervises volunteers and assistant instructors through verbal and written communication.
Consults with the Recreation Programmer regarding any problems with scheduling, program participants, parents, facilities, etc.
Prepares lesson plans and utilizes effective teaching techniques.
Completes instruction of skills for each progressive level and evaluates each participant's progress at the end of each session.
Maintains open communication with the Recreation Programmer, other instructors, assistant instructors, participants, their parents/families and volunteers to meet the needs of program participants and their parents.
Assures that all safety precautions are implemented.
Minimum Qualifications
Must have a minimum of 1 year of instruction experience (at least 30 hours of instruction/year in some activity within the past 3 years) or a minimum of 2 years of training experience and/or certification if required for activity. Previous professional or volunteer experience in a recreational setting specific to the topic of instruction. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the general public. Must be enthusiastic, mature and possess good physical health. Must be able to work with children and adults in an instructional setting and possess the ability to relate to a diversity of cultural backgrounds. Knowledge of first aid procedures. CPR and First Aid certification required. Applicant must permit a state of Virginia Central Records Historical background check.
