Assistant District Attorney (Child Support Enforcement)

Essential Functions:

  • Legal Representation: Represent the County Attorney’s Office in hearings, court proceedings, and enforcement actions involving child support cases.
  • Case Management: Manage a voluminous caseload of child support enforcement cases, including initiating legal actions, tracking progress, and ensuring compliance with child support orders.
  • Litigation: Draft and file legal motions, petitions, and other documents related to child support enforcement. Prepare for and represent CSE in weekly hearings before judges, and other relevant parties.
  • Enforcement Actions: Utilize a variety of enforcement mechanisms, including wage garnishments, tax refund intercepts, property liens, and license suspensions, to ensure compliance with child support obligations.
  • Negotiation and Settlement: Negotiate settlements and agreements between parents and relevant stakeholders to facilitate the payment of child support in cases where disputes arise.
  • Collaboration: Work with social service agencies, law enforcement, opposing counsel, employers and other stakeholders to gather information, facilitate payment arrangements, and provide legal guidance on best practices for child support enforcement.
  • Advisory Role: Provide guidance to the child support agency and staff on issues related to legal and procedural matters, including paternity, modifications of support orders, and interstate enforcement.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure all actions and decisions are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws, policies and procedures. Maintain detailed records and prepare reports for internal and external stakeholders as required.
  • Other: Performs all related work as requested by the Director of Child Support, First Assistant County Attorney, and the County Attorney

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of child support enforcement laws and procedures.
  • Proven litigation and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a high caseload and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive cases with professionalism.
  • Ability to operate computers for data input and retrieval; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Courtnet/Efiling, and other systems as required by CSE.
  • Must be a mentally and emotionally mature individual with initiative, and dedication to excellent customer service.
  • Must work well with the public in a professional manner with respect, patience, and understanding.
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills are required.
  • The ideal candidate exhibits the ability to work well in a team setting and individually.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school
  • License: Admission and member in good standing of Kentucky Bar Association
  • Experience: Family law experience is a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with government agencies or in a public service legal environment.
  • Familiarity with child support enforcement software and case management systems.
