What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medication Technician position at Fayetteville Manor Assisted Living?
Department: Personal Care
Responsible To: Resident Care Coordinator and Administrator
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must be a high school graduate or certified under the G.E.D. program, or have passed an alternative examination established by the Department.
- Shall have documentation of successfully completing the clinical skills validation portion of the competency evaluation according to paragraph (d) and (e) of Rule 10 NCAC 42C.2014.
- Medication Technicians who perform other personal care tasks shall also meet the staff training and competency requirements according to Rule.1410 of this section. Persons authorized by state occupational licensure laws to administer medications are exempt from this requirement.
- Medication Technicians and staff who directly supervise the administration of medications. Except persons authorized by state occupational licensure laws to administer medications, shall complete six hours of continuing education annually related to medication administration.
- Responsibilities to include but not limited to the following:
- Use universal Precautions and Infection Control.
- Ensure appropriate sanitary techniques are used during preparation and administration of medications.
- Know the procedure for identifying residents before administering medications or treatments.
- Gather the appropriate equipment for medication/treatment administration.
- Offer sufficient fluids during administration of oral medications.
- Appropriately utilize the Medication Administration Record (MAR) during preparation and administration of medication.
- Ensure all information is accurate on the MAR
- Appropriate documentation of medication/treatment administration.
- Process physicians orders.
- Utilize back-up pharmacy when necessary.
- Order medications at the appropriate time.
- Perform narcotic counts at the change of each shift and document as necessary.
- Give PRN medications as prescribed by the physician and document the results on the back of the MAR.
- If medications arrive from the pharmacy, they are to be checked in and placed in the appropriate storage area.
- Any other duties/tasks are assigned.
