Summary of Responsibilities
As a T/D Smart Grid Controls Technician, you will be responsible for installing protective relay and communication systems components, performing DNP mapping, and conducting functional/startup testing of new Smart Grid device additions. You will maintain communication equipment and interconnections with SCADA/OMS/DMS, troubleshoot and repair Smart Grid equipment controls and communication systems, and ensure equipment is returned to service with minimal outage time. This role operates under general supervision and requires extended hours and on-call availability.

- Computer, calculator, communication equipment, and other equipment as required.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Good knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Good knowledge of electrical theory, laws, rules, and standards as applied to electrical construction and maintenance.
- Good knowledge of methods, procedures, tools, and instruments used to install, repair, and maintain Smart Grid device control and communication systems in T/D electric systems.
- Skill in accurately using testing equipment.
- Skill in developing, maintaining, and submitting detailed reports and records.
- Skill in operating computers and using applicable software.
- Ability to follow technical written and oral instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited two-year college/technical college with a degree/certification in electrical/electronic technology, or related field and a minimum of three years of specialized experience in the maintenance, repair, calibration, and testing of protective relays/relay systems; OR
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of five years of specialized experience as defined above; OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and specialized experience as defined above.
Special Requirements
- Functional Employment Test (FET) required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
Safety Hazards
- Exposure to elements including, but not limited to, energized lines, heights, and a variety of weather conditions.
Protective Equipment
- As required in the Public Works Commission’s Safety Manual.
