What are the responsibilities and job description for the WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN position at Fayetteville Public Works Commission?
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: This class is responsible for performing standardized non-professional technical engineering office and/or field work, involving the application of the methods and techniques of elementary engineering for the Public Works Commission. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, drawing/updating/maintaining diagrams, and plot charts; preparing layouts and work orders for routine service requests and staking sheets; interpreting basic sketches, schematics, charts, graphs, blueprints, and block/wiring diagrams; researching information/locating utilities; writing/ reviewing assigned sections of project specifications pertaining to a variety of materials/construction methods; writing items describing materials or methods by analyzing and extracting data from drawings, notes, and other sources; reproducing engineering drawings; tracing/filling in details; preparing material cost estimates; using a variety of tools/ devices. Operating under general supervision, work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures. Performs related work as required. EQUIPMENT OPERATED: Computer, CAD equipment, calculator, communication equipment, and other equipment, as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of safety rules/regulations/ procedures, as appropriate; good knowledge of methods, practices, and materials used in the trades; working knowledge of survey work; working knowledge of engineering and drafting; skill in using/reading/interpreting testing devices/equipment; ability to perform accurate mathematical computations; ability to estimate cost of materials; ability to evaluate and recommend solutions to technical problems; ability to operate computers/software to prepare/revise/upgrade sketches and drawings; ability to read/interpret engineering plans, drawings, sketches, blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, etc.; ability to work in confining areas; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to prepare/maintain reports/ records; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of employees, officials, contractors, customers, and the general public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (either)
(A) Graduation from an accredited two (2) year community college/technical school with a degree/certification in engineering technology, drafting, design, surveying or related field *and a minimum of one (1) year of progressively responsible construction or engineering experience involving estimating, surveying, or related work; OR
(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma **and a minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience as defined in (A) above; OR
(C) An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined in (A) and (B) above.
*NOTE: When employed in the Power Plant: The year(s) of experience defined in (A), (B), and (C) above shall have included using *CAD equipment to prepare/revise/upgrade drawings.
**NOTE: When employed in Electric Systems Engineering: Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and a minimum of five (5) years of responsible experience as defined in (A) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
SAFETY HAZARDS: When performing field work the worker is subject to inside/outside working conditions, noise, hazards including a variety of physical conditions such as proximity to moving vehicles, heavy equipment and mechanical parts, and climbing ladders.
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: As required in the Public Works Commission’s Safety Manual.
