Job Description
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES : This class is responsible for performing drafting / graphics work in the preparation of technical drawings / maps / charts and other illustrations within Electric Systems or Water Resources Divisions. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, updating maps, performing limited field work, drawing encroachments, and digitizing maps; operating GIS and CAD systems / coordinating all relevant activities with city / county agencies / other divisional departments; preparing / assisting other engineering / office personnel with various work orders; preparing assembly / parts / structure / construction drawings, and detailed / complete technical drawings / plans / maps from field survey / notes / sketches / general instructions; preparing drawings showing the location of various elements of the water / sewer / electric systems throughout the service area; preparing staking sheets for designed projects based on PWC standard assemblies indicating electrical materials / quantities; independently performing large / complex projects in plotting new subdivisions and water / sewer main or electrical extension to maps; rotating two (2) week assignments on pole maintenance program. Operating under general supervision work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures. Performs related work as required. EQUIPMENT OPERATED : Computer, CAD equipment, calculator, communication equipment, and other equipment, as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES : Good knowledge of safety rules / regulations / procedures, as appropriate; good knowledge, based on assignment, of PWC's Electrical Systems or Water Resources standards / operations / procedures; good knowledge of operating characteristics / capabilities / limitations / service requirements of current hardware / software / equipment in use at the agency; good knowledge of engineering drafting / graphics terminology, procedures, techniques, and methods, and the use of surveying / drafting instruments / techniques; good knowledge of the principles and methods of blueprint reading, electrical / civil engineering, and utility construction practices; working knowledge of mathematics, including algebra / geometry / trigonometry; skill in operating drawing, drafting equipment, CAD / GIS, computer equipment, and applicable software; ability to assemble data from a variety of sources; ability to interpret engineering field notes / sketches / designs in the completion of work assignments; ability to perform accurate mathematical computations; ability to perform / assist effectively in all phases of drafting work, read / interpret plans and specifications; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, and all levels of employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : (either)
A) Graduation from an accredited two (2) year community / technical college with an Associates degree in drafting or engineering technology and a minimum of one (1) year of drafting experience; OR
B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and a minimum of three (3) years of drafting experience; OR
C) An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience as defined in (A) and (B) above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS : Some positions in this class may require the possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS : Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position.
SAFETY HAZARDS : Minimal.
PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT : As required in the Public Works Commission's Safety Manual.
