Key Requirements

Major Duties
GS-7 :
Serves as a trainee performing assignments that consist of activities which prepare incumbent for forensic science duties, which include processing items of evidence associated with a specialized discipline.Receives and delivers evidence to and from other laboratory components, ensuring proper chain-of-custody. Inventories evidence, and when necessary photographs items and prepares detailed laboratory notes.Receives training in the processing of evidence, using various scientific equipment. Also receives training in the decision making process utilized to determine whether examinations should be conducted, and to what extent.Receives training in the handling of dangerous materials such as explosives. Work may involve the operation of tools and heavy machinery.GS-9 :
Serves as a technical specialist in a forensic science discipline and provides assistance to Forensic Examiners (FEs) in the examination of evidence. In conjunction with FEs, performs the following duties :Performs routine to moderately complex technical examinations and responsible assignments involving the examinations of a variety of materials.Receives and delivers evidence to and from other laboratory components, ensuring proper chain-of-custody. Inventories evidence, and when necessary photographs items and prepares detailed laboratory notes.Utilizes a variety of scientific equipment and technical tools to conduct standard examinations and experiments utilizing well defined methods. Is involved in the decision making process to determine whether examinations should be conducted, and to what extent.Uses independence in planning of work and making minor adaptation of methods. A. Successful completion of a 4 year course of study in an accredited college or university bachelor's (or higher) degree in physical science, biology, chemistry, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science.
B. Completion of education and experience - education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and / or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
Specialized Experience (SE) :
GS-7 : Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level. SE is defined as follows :
Professional knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts and practices of physical science in order to receive training in a specialized forensic science discipline and to analyze routine materials.Knowledge of the characteristics and use of appropriate scientific equipment, instrumentation and tools and skill in performing many steps required to gather reliable data.Knowledge of examination techniques and skill in applying established methods and procedures to provide technical information about submitted items of evidence and to suggest minor modifications of methods and procedures to solve problems encountered or to improve the quality of results.Knowledge of laboratory scientific and administrative procedures.Skill in oral and written communications.Knowledge gained from on-the-job training of the types of examinations performed and the policies, procedures and organizational structure of the Laboratory in order to coordinate the delivery and receipt of evidence.Knowledge of Laboratory safety practices in order to carry out duties in a safe manner.Knowledge of general procedures used to collect and process evidence.GS-9 : Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level.
