Job Title: Advanced Shipfitter
Location: Newport News, VA
Job Summary: We are seeking an experienced advanced shipfitter with a strong background in shipbuilding and steel fabrication. The ideal candidate will have four years of commercial/naval experience and the ability to perform complex welding, structural assembly, and installation tasks in accordance with specifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform multi-pass tack welding using the SMAW process.
- Operate oxygen/propane burning and heating torches.
- Read and interpret complex structural assembly drawings, blueprints, and sketches.
- Fabricate and assemble structural parts based on specified dimensions.
- Use vibratory tools (grinders, needle guns) and air carbon arc gouging.
- Erect and set complex shell plates, decks, bulkheads, and other structural components.
- Install and replace hull inserts, penetrations, and foundations.
- Follow safety regulations and shipbuilding industry standards.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Four years of first-class Shipfitter experience (documented).
- Proficient in multi-pass tack welding, burning, and heating.
- Ability to interpret complex blueprints and weld symbols.
- Experience in physically demanding environments (shipbuilding, steel fabrication).
- Proficient in using work packages, drawings, and ship reference lines to execute work.
- Strong knowledge of structural assembly, welding techniques, and safety standards.
Optional Skills:
- Rigger/material handling experience.
- Experience with optical instruments (Level, Transit).
- Shipwright or Erect & Set experience.
- Tank testing and mobile equipment operation (JLG, scissor lift).
Qualification:
- Must pass a Multi-Pass Tack Welder Qualification Test upon reporting.
