What are the responsibilities and job description for the Design Engineer II - R&D (ESG) position at Federal Signal?
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead R&D projects from early brainstorming through the prototype and validation phases.
- Generate 3D layouts, mechanical assemblies, and technical drawings of clean sheet designs using CAD and PLM software tools.
- Apply engineering calculations such as static structural analysis, machine kinematics, fatigue analysis, thermodynamics, and design for manufacturability before generating robust first-pass concepts.
- Draft test plans to validate design technical or customer requirements based on direct voice of customer research.
- Must be able to self-manage certain aspects of projects that may include schedule planning, conducting new supplier meetings, working with external vendors on prototype parts, collecting feedback from internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to jump into new industries or technologies when solving a new issue or coming up with novel engineering solutions. Must demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and flexibility to step outside of your comfort zone time to time.
- Some travel (estimated 10-20%) will be required to visit with customers, research and study new technologies at sister company facilities in North America, and participate in testing or validation in remote locations.
- Flexibility to perform other duties and assignments as required.

Position Requirements
- 3 years relevant job experience
- Proficiency designing new mechanical concepts, assemblies, and components using a CAD platform and creating engineering drawings with appropriate GD&T, tolerance stackups applied.
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills, knowledge of fundamental engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
- Good written and verbal communication skills to clearly articulate and present complex technical concepts to customers, colleagues, and top management.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics including Mechanical layouts, Hydraulic, Electrical, Pneumatics, and Water systems.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of tools
Desired Skills
- 1 year of design experience with NX or Creo.
- Experience in designing for automotive, mobile machinery, heavy equipment (agricultural or industrial), or durable goods manufacturers.
- Experience applying computer aided engineering tools for simulation such as Finite Element Analysis or Computational Fluid Dynamics products like Ansys/Fluent.
- Experience modeling systems or mechanical assemblies using Matlab/Simulink products.
- Experience in BEV or HEV design, the design of electrical actuators and associated electromechanical systems.
- Experience with engineering safety analysis tools such as FMEA, HARA, or functional safety.
- Training in Six Sigma or structured problem solving and root cause analysis techniques.
Anticipated Salary Range: $68,731.00 - $117,825.00
