What are the responsibilities and job description for the New Product Development Design Engineer II position at Federal Signal?
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develops layouts concepts, parameters and designs for new and existing product re-designs using Teamcenter to keep drawings and documentation updated. Understands multi-level product Bill of Material structure to effectively develop options and/ or accessories to support product sales. Writes Engineering Change Requests and product structures.
- Uses mathematics, statistics, dynamics and other engineering disciplines for calculations and evaluation of alternatives for current product design and their functionality in current product designs.
- Conducts and prepares preliminary cost estimates of designs and redesigns and evaluates products against engineering standards and cost reduction proposals to determine feasibility. Performs feasibility studies and analysis as required to meet product performance and reliability requirements.
- Assists in generating detail specifications of the individual components of the new design and replacement components in end of life and in cost reductions projects. Fabricates mockups and builds working prototypes of new products.
- Performs research, design and development in such areas as mechanical, thermal, hydraulic thermodynamic or heat transfer for production, transmission, measurement and use of energy. Applies research to planning, design and development of mechanical or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines and/ or machines.
- Develops engineering specifications for materials or processes through research and/or supervision of tests programs. Assists in the development of work instructions that convey design intent to the assembly process and troubleshoot product systems by working directly with technicians and assemblers to resolve issues.
- Communicates with vendors where engineering is required to develop specifications for components and processes. Assist Purchasing, Manufacturing Engineering and Quality Assurance in vendor selection and in approving vendor's parts.
- Works with and assists operations, industrial/test engineering, and other engineering function personnel during the course of design projects to achieve desired outcome.
- Coordinates project progress by monitoring performance of designers, drafters, and other personnel; Acts as a resource to provide design guidance and instructions for other engineers.
- Provide engineering support to Field Service to assist in resolving warranty and performance issues. May include occasional travel to the field and/ or trade shows.
- Flexibility to perform other duties and assignments as required.

Position Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in technical field from an accredited university required; Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is preferred
- Minimum 3 years of engineering experience in mobile machine technology required
- Experience in heavy equipment or durable goods parts and service desired
- Requires excellent analytical and problem solving skills
- Familiarity with and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics in the following disciplines: Mechanical, Hydraulic, Electrical, Pneumatics, and Water systems
- Working knowledge of NX CAD and Teamcenter or similar Product Life Cycle Management software with ability to keep drawings and documentation updated as required
- Knowledge of basic engineering principles, theories, and concepts with general application of standard principles, theories, concepts, and techniques within field of specialization
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of tools
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to clearly articulate the problem resolution to customers, key work partners and top management
- Experience working with a release database for submitting Engineering Change Requests and Design Changes a plus
- Experience working with JD Edwards a plus
