What are the responsibilities and job description for the FRED Summer Assistant position at Federal Way Public Schools?
- As a team member of one of the three busses, responsibilities include: Facilitates and participates in the full implementation and summer functions of the assigned Fred bus. This includes set up and take down of Fred Station at sites and FWPS Central Kitchen. This may require lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Collaborates with FRED team, district administrators, teachers, traditional/non-traditional child care providers, and parents/families to engage children in literacy, math, technology, physical education, play-based activities and development of community to school connections.
- Engages key community and District representatives including but not limited to: District Literacy Team members, Community “Let’s Read” representatives, Transportation Department staff, Early Learning Department, and other potential stakeholders in a dialog about kindergarten transition activities.
- Prepares and submits required data sets to the Early Learning Department and Nutrition Services as required.
- Expected to play and interact with children, by running, actively participating in games and exercises in fields, on pavement/cement or dirt including uneven surfaces.
- Must work as a team, which may include helping serve food in emergencies, handling heavy carts and/or assisting any employee working on FRED at any time.
- Must be able to fully load FRED, set up at sites, take down sites and offload FRED bus on a daily basis(equipment and materials at district selected sites). This includes take down awnings, tables, chairs, portable tents/tarps and blankets, boxes of books/games/toys, garbage and other bulky materials weighing up to 50 pounds at multiple assigned sites within short time frames of 30 minutes or less.
- Launder towels, blankets and keep tarps (wash/dry/fold) in clean condition.
- Keep FRED clean and tidy, wash interior windows, tables, chairs, and other cleaning as needed.
- Keep FRED materials organized at two or more sites such as the Central Kitchen and the ESC.
- Perform other job-related responsibilities as assigned.
The FRED Bus Summer Assistant position is responsible for working with students and families and implementing specialized summer transition activities for students who access FRED services. FRED team assistants will participate in high energy, physical activities alongside children. Specific activities have been identified to meet the criteria of Federal Title 1/LAP and USDA funding.

High School Diploma or Equivalent
And one of the following:
AA degree, OR
48 Semester Credits OR 72 Quarter Credits OR Pass the state approved ParaPro Assessment
Four (4) years working in an elementary school, ECE program or community based organization serving young children and their families
One (1) year keyboarding and computer work
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Consistent attendance and positive evaluations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field
Bilingual
Possess CPR and first aid certification
CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Must be able to work entire summer: Full shift, Monday - Thursday without days or hours off (Excluding holidays and days off)
Possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License
Must be able to drive personal vehicle to multiple work sites, including the central kitchen, apartment complexes or other district identified work sites
Criminal background clearance
