Role Overview
We are seeking a skilled City Driver to transport freight between our Service Centers and customers, supporting sales activities along the way.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate tractor-trailer combinations, including doubles (and triples) and/or straight trucks, adhering to strict safety protocols.
- Perform daily pre-trip safety inspections on equipment to ensure optimal performance and minimize downtime.
- Hook/unhook trailers and converter dollies to/from a tractor and/or trailer with precision and efficiency.
- Handle freight using motorized and manual equipment, such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks, while maintaining a safe working environment.
- Secure freight inside trailers using appropriate tools and supplies, guaranteeing its integrity during transit.
- Address damaged freight as necessary, resolving issues promptly and professionally.
- Verify and complete required documentation and reports, upholding accuracy and attention to detail.
- Comply with hazardous material regulations and procedures, ensuring a safe working environment for everyone involved.
- Collect cash or checks for freight charges, maintaining required documentation and adhering to financial protocols.
- Follow dispatch instructions and communicate with dispatch as needed, fostering open collaboration and effective teamwork.
- Interact with customers to determine pick-up or delivery needs and identify potential new business opportunities, providing exceptional customer service at every turn.
Working Conditions:
As a City Driver, you will be exposed to various types of weather and road conditions throughout your shift, requiring adaptability and resilience. You may also be exposed to noise and vibration, dust and diesel fumes, and hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations.
Qualifications:
- Must hold a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements.
- Must have at least one year of experience within the last three years or complete the FedEx Freight Driver Development Course.
- Must possess an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations.
- Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
- Basic written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to lift/carry hand freight weighing up to 100 pounds several times a week.
- Ability to sit for extended periods, bend, twist, squat, and climb in and out of the truck.
- Ability to follow instructions and complete required training.
- Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team.
