What are the responsibilities and job description for the Designer I position at Felling Trailers?
The Designer I is responsible for using their knowledge of mechanical design, in creating novel solutions for Fellings customers on time and in budget. This is accomplished through the creation of models and drawings of weldments, assemblies and parts used throughout Felling using Computer Aided Design. Designer I is also responsible for BOM creation with the aid of ERP software.
Supervision:
- High level of supervision from Engineering Management.

Essential Specific Job Knowledge:
Technical:
- Strong mechanical aptitude.
- Awareness of DOT standards that impact the design of Felling products.
CAD/CAE:
- Experience with Solidworks and Inventor CAD systems.
- Working knowledge of Auto CAD.
Product:
- Awareness of a small number of Felling’s less complex products.
Felling Process:
- Awareness of Syspro WIP Query, Inventory Query and Change Orders.
- Awareness of sales order process and new product development process
- Awareness of Felling’s production capabilities.
- Awareness of Felling’s supply chain capabilities.
Essential Specific Job Duties:
- Work independently or as part of a team as needed.
- Mentor less experienced engineering team members.
- Keeps abreast of changes, developments and new products in his/her area of responsibility and advises management of potential applicability.
- Stays up to date on Solidworks, Inventor and Auto CAD best practices for modeling and drawing.
- Use CAD to create routed systems models and drawings.
- Uses knowledge to lay out and design product of lower complexity.
- Uses Syspro to generate BOM’s, and where used reports.
- Uses knowledge to creatively develop designs for Felling products and solutions to internal and external customers.
- Creates models and drawings of weldments, assemblies and parts for sales orders, initial concepts and any other task assigned by Engineering Management.
- Verifies accuracy and completeness of their work as well as checks the quality of others.
- Makes revisions to existing models and drawings as directed.
- Assists with the design, modeling and drawing of existing and new product.
- Receives sales orders and reviews vault to determine if the model or component or something similar has been done before.
- Assist sales representatives with any question or issues they may have.
- Converts prototypes to production ready models and drawings.
- Occasionally works with shop personnel to troubleshoot and solve production and design issues.
- Occasionally works with purchasing to spec out vendor components.
- Occasionally works with vendors to spec appropriate items for use at Felling.
- Occasionally works with Quality Control to assure parts meet specifications.
- Ensures all tasks in their area of responsibility are completed on time.
- Produces consistent error-free, high quality work.
- Keeps Engineering Management informed of project progress.
- Willingly works on any task that needs attention.
