JOB SUMMARY
The Nurse Manager plays a pivotal role in overseeing the daily nursing unit operations and ensuring the delivery of high-quality patient care in the hospital. The Nurse Manager will oversee the selection of qualified RN staff members, orientation processes, and work schedules for the nurses. The Nurse Manager will work closely with physicians, administrative staff, and other healthcare members to promote a positive, patient-centered environment and inspire innovation and skill growth within the clinical team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Leadership:
· Directs and coordinates activities in the patient care units which include planning, organizing, implementing and evaluation all clinical activities for optimal effectiveness. Partners with providers and other clinical department leaders to optimize care workflows.
- Participates in departmental policy development and interpretation for members of the health care team.
- Identifies opportunities to improve clinical/financial performance and implements change processes to enhance departmental and organizational values.
- Conducts chart audits and data tracking related survey readiness quality projects.
- Serves on the Hospital Staffing Committee to help ensure a sufficient number of qualified staff are available to assess patient care.
- Provides coaching and mentorship to direct reports to ensure safe and exceptional patient care.
Manpower Management:
- Oversees the scheduler nurse to ensure each schedule is posted timely and with the proper skill mix.
- Models and maintains openness and inclusiveness while encouraging others to work collaboratively.
- Assist to create an environment that encourages teamwork, retention, and recruitment.
- Interviews and assists to select RNs, LPNs, NACs, UCs and other staff appropriate to meet the staffing plan and clinical care objectives of the department.
- Provides supervision for the department nurses. Corrects and approved timecards.
- Ensure that nurses are up to date with certifications, training, and education in line with hospital and regulatory requirements.
- Support staff through ongoing communication and development, fostering a positive workplace culture.
- Assists to resolve conflicts in a timely manner.
- Performs nurse performance reviews annually, mentors and coach’s staff members for desired clinical or interpersonal goals.
- Available off-hours via phone as a resource for nursing staff as able.
- Promotes clinical and professional development of the health care team through role modeling, delegation of duties, guidance, teaching and removing barriers to team success.
- Develops and maintains relationships with departmental staff, providers, other department managers/staff, and senior leadership team to ensure coordination of workflows, programs and policies.
Patient Care Delivery:
- Promotes patient centered care based on best practices and nursing practice standards.
- Assists the CNO in maintaining necessary regulatory and quality standards.
- Assures that an appropriate and current plan of care is in place and followed by patients.
- Evaluates delivery of patient care by unit-based staff to assure that care is being delivered within the appropriate scope of practice.
- Initiates mechanisms to identify and resolve issues related to patient care and nursing service delivery, assuring that issues are resolved in a timely and effective process.
- Remains clinically active and capable of mentoring/coaching staff in skill development and application.
- Leads and/or participates in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and operational efficiency. Inspires a culture of continuous performance improvement.
Financial Management:
- Monitors overall department performance to ensure compliance with appropriate standards, resources and productivity targets and manages within the allocated budget.
- Assists in the development of the annual nurse department budget including manpower, supplies, equipment needs, and anticipated expenses.
- Develops and/or recommends ways to improve revenue generation, reduce expenses, service expansion and departmental efficiencies..
· Educates and engages clinical nursing staff about financial performance of unit and their contribution in the financial success of the department.
· Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS
· Actively checks and responds to emails throughout the day.
· Completes all mandatory education within the given timeframe.
· Maintains regulatory requirements.
· Reports to work on time and as scheduled.
· Wears identification while on duty; Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner in the community.
· Attends annual review and department in-services as scheduled.
· Attends at least 75% of staff meetings; reviews all monthly staff meeting minutes.
· Actively participates in the department’s quality improvement (QI) activities.
· Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices and the employee handbook.
· Communicates the mission, vision and values of the organization as well as the focus of the department.
· Meets dress code standards for the department; appearance is neat and clean.
· All Ferry County Health employees are required to maintain confidentiality in accordance with organizational policy, state and federal regulations, including but not limited to, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
· Current license to practice as a registered nurse in Washington State
· Bachelor's degree in nursing preferred.
· An Associate Degree in Nursing is minimum entry level
· A minimum of two or more years of progressive RN clinical experience in acute care nursing practice.
· At least one year's experience in Charge Nurse, Supervisor, Assistant Manager or Manager role(s). Previous Manager experience(s) preferred.
· BLS, ACLS, PALS within 3 months of hire, TNCC, NRP completion within 1 year of hire.
· National Nursing Specialty Certification desirable.
OTHER SKILLS & ABILITIES
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, patients, customers, and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
