The Fetzer Institute is searching for our next community member to hold the role of culinary services assistant. The ideal candidate will be motivated and organized, assisting in setting snack and beverage services, stocking culinary items, performing administrative tasks, and supporting the culinary team with light food preparation. This position is perfect for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, is passionate about learning the craft of culinary excellence, and is excited to explore their personal and spiritual growth.
The Culinary Services Assistant typically works 35 hours weekly, Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM. However, some early mornings, evenings, and weekends will be required with advance notice. This position pays $23.70 per hour and is eligible for benefits including medical, dental, vision, prescription, 401k, paid time off, and an extensive wellness package.

Culinary Service Set-Up
- Set up and organize snack and beverage stations for daily service, ensuring all items are presented neatly in accordance with the Institute's commitment to sacred hospitality.
- Ensure that all snacks and beverages are stocked and available for our guests and staff, in Seasons, guest rooms, and the administration building.
- Maintain inventory of culinary supplies and kitchen items, ensuring that necessary items are stocked and easily accessible. Assist in receiving, organizing, and storing deliveries of kitchen supplies.
- Cleaning and upkeep of the culinary equipment
Administrative Support
- Perform basic administrative tasks such as maintaining inventory logs, coordinating culinary service requests, and assisting in menu distribution.
- Utilize the Institute e-mail system to email staff and receive staff communications.
- Other duties as assigned.
Prep Cook
- Assist in the preparation of meal production
- Openness to developing skills required for hotline production
- Comply with all applicable sanitation, health, and personal hygiene standards and follow established food production procedures.
- Attend training in food safety and the Michigan Food Law.
- Assist in the set-up and tear-down of break services and continental breakfasts.
- Assist in the set-up, presentation and clearing of serving lines and banquet tables. Complete cleaning tasks, which include sweeping floors, mopping floors, clearing tables, washing dishes and taking out trash.
- Perform equipment checks and report problems to promote a safe work environment.
- Support Institutes compose and recycle efforts
- Complete other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: This position requires a minimum of one year of work experience in food service, light administrative skills, and an excitement for learning. The incumbent must be flexible to work all days and hours with advance notice. Other important qualifications include:
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work in a team-oriented environment and to relate to Institute guests in a hospitable manner

- Moderate reading, writing, and math skills, especially fractions
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and procedures
- Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft Word and Outlook

Working Conditions: This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time, reach, bend, and push and pull carts weighing up to 300 pounds. The ability to learn how to operate basic kitchen appliances such as oven, stove, dishwasher, meat slicer, coffee machine, steamer, mixer, chef’s knives, hot holding equipment, and food processor is essential.
