Broadband Professional Engineer
Position Overview
A Fibersmith Broadband Professional Engineer performs advanced professional engineering work related to broadband networks. They will work to develop plans, specifications, contract preparation, administration, and supervision as needed on assigned tasks to see that these items are complete, accurate, and in accordance with good engineering practice. A professional engineer is involved in the resolution of design problems that may include performing field investigation or inspections, detailed design work, and detailed checking of design computations done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project. They may occasionally supervise and schedule the work of other team members. They will have client contact at management and staff levels and the ability to present new concepts and project plans to the client or at industry forums.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Design broadband networks utilizing programs such as 3GIS, ESRI, AutoCAD, and other design software and tools as required.
- Provide calculations and records in support of feasibility studies, cost modeling, project management, and troubleshooting.
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates.
- Develop plans and specifications for contract preparation and administration.
- Schedule and conduct meetings with the Owner to review contracts, perform pre-bid meetings and bid openings, pre-construction meetings, and final ride outs on a regular basis.
- Complete fiber optic splicing schematics.
- Attend and/or lead weekly coordination and project management calls.
- Maintain project status and changes that take place on assigned projects so the overall organization can respond to client requests.
- Provide competent engineering and technical assistance to the Project Managers and Senior Design Consultants.
- Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints to plan projects.
- Estimate quantities and cost of materials, equipment, or labor to determine project feasibility.
- Prepare or present reports on topics such as bid proposals, industry trends, and new technology.
- Provide technical advice regarding design, construction, or program modifications and structural repairs to managerial personnel.
- Complete weekly time sheets, in conjunction with weekly expense and mileage reports.
- Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) License
- Minimum 5 years engineering experience in broadband projects, with an emphasis in Fiber to the Home (FTTH)
- In-depth knowledge of fiber optic technologies, including GPON and EPON.
- Accuracy, attention to detail, neatness, thoroughness, and clarity in work.
- Flexibility, ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Teamwork - Considers and seeks out the impact of his/her actions in the team.
- Self-directed with initiative to perform weekly, monthly, periodical tasks as assigned.
- Maintain professional appearance and interaction with clients, contractors, vendors, co-workers, etc.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Travel on job site as assigned.
