Job Description
A LiDAR Collection Operator is responsible for operating specialized vehicles equipped with LiDAR, GPS, and camera systems to collect high-precision spatial data. This role requires strict adherence to safety standards, technical proficiency with the LiDAR data collection system, attention to detail to ensure the quality and accuracy of the data collected, and frequent, extended travel.
Skills & Qualifications
- LiDAR Data Acquisition
- Set up, operate, and monitor LiDAR sensors, cameras, GPS units, and other related equipment.
- Validate LiDAR system performance before, during, and after data collection to ensure quality and accuracy of collected data.
- Adjust scanning parameters (e.g., scanner range, density) as needed based on project requirements or field conditions.
- Equipment Inspection and Maintenance
- Perform routine inspections of the LiDAR system, camera equipment, and vehicle prior to each trip.
- Troubleshoot and address minor technical issues on-site; coordinate with technical support or management for more complex repairs.
- Keep the vehicle clean and well-organized, ensuring all equipment is safely stored and in good working order.
- Data Management
- Transfer collected LiDAR and associated data from on-board systems to project servers or storage devices.
- Label and organize data files in accordance with established protocols.
- Communicate any issues with data quality or equipment functionality to the project team.
- Safety and Compliance
- Follow all company and regulatory safety guidelines.
- Utilize safe driving practices at all times.
- Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of daily driving logs, equipment checks, and data collection activities.
- Prepare basic field reports to document progress, issues, and any incidents encountered.
- Collaborate with project managers to provide timely updates on data collection status.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Coordinate with project managers, GIS specialists, or surveyors to understand project requirements and provide feedback on field conditions.
- Communicate effectively with team members to ensure project milestones are met according to schedule.
- Assist with training or onboarding of new LiDAR truck operators as needed.
- Vehicle Operation and Driving
- Safely operate a LiDAR collection truck under various traffic and weather conditions.
- Obey all traffic laws and regulations while maintaining a good driving record.
- Plan and follow daily routes as assigned, optimizing drive time and data coverage.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
- Previous experience in field data collection, surveying, or GIS preferred.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Technical Skills
- Familiarity with LiDAR systems, GPS, and other surveying/mapping technology is highly desirable.
- Basic computer skills for data transfer and file management (Windows, cloud storage, etc.).
- Ability to troubleshoot minor hardware/software issues with LiDAR or camera systems.
- Travel Requirements
- This position requires frequent, extended travel, including overnight.
- Candidates must be willing to travel on short notice and have flexibility in schedule, including evening and weekend travel.
