What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2.1 Hardware Engineer – Mechatronics & Embedded Systems position at Field AI?
Field AI is transforming how robots interact with the real world. We are building risk-aware, reliable, and field-ready AI systems that address the most complex challenges in robotics, unlocking the full potential of embodied intelligence. We go beyond typical data-driven approaches or pure transformer-based architectures, and are charting a new course, with already-globally-deployed solutions delivering real-world results and rapidly improving models through real-field applications.
We are looking for a mechatronics engineer to join our hardware team onsite in Mission Viejo, CA to help develop the best bodies for our embodied AI! The core of Field AI's autonomy is the Field Foundation Model, but the smartest algorithm can't run without a brain. Join our team and help us develop this brain, and other capabilities for our robotic systems.
- Design and build robotic systems that integrate seamlessly with Field AI’s autonomy platform
- Develop and test mechanical, electrical, and software components for our robotics systems
- Collaborate with AI researchers to integrate machine learning models into robotic platforms
- Iterate on prototypes to refine performance and robustness
- Conduct field testing and implement improvements based on real-world feedback
- Ensure systems meet quality and reliability standards for deployment in diverse environments
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
- 3 years direct experience with end-to-end robot systems design and implementation
- 3 years direct experience with mechanical, electrical, and software integration for mechatronic systems
- Substantial knowledge of electronics design and debugging (e.g., PCB design, sensor integration, motor drivers)
- 2 years experience with prototyping, testing, and iterating on designs in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to effectively collaborate across interdisciplinary teams, including software and AI specialists
- Strong problem-solving skills and a tenacious, hands-on approach to engineering challenges
- Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in robotics (e.g., Python, C , ROS)
- Proficiency in CAD tools for mechanical design (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or equivalent)
- Masters degree in electrical engineering
- Experience working with AI-powered robotic systems or embedded AI platforms
- Familiarity with rapid manufacturing techniques such as 3D printing and CNC machining
- Experience with power systems, including battery management and power distribution
- Familiarity with safety and compliance standards for robotic systems
- A passion for pushing the boundaries of robotics technology and creating innovative solutions
Compensation and Benefits
Our salary range is generous ($70,000 - $300,000 annual), but we take into consideration an individual's background and experience in determining final salary; base pay offered may vary considerably depending on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Also, while we enjoy being together on-site, we are open to exploring a hybrid or remote option.
