The Associate Director for Residence Life at Hood College is a critical leadership position within the Office of Residence Life (ORL). This Live-in role includes an on-campus apartment and meal plan and is responsible for fostering a vibrant, inclusive, and engaging

residential community. Primary responsibilities include overseeing student development initiatives, supervising and training Resident Assistants (RAs), managing building operations, administering student conduct, and supporting crisis management, conflict resolution, and special campus events. The Associate Director collaborates with campus stakeholders to promote a thriving residential experience and support student success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Student Development (30%)

  • Design and implement initiatives that promote students' personal, academic, and social growth.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to enhance programming for living-learning communities and engagement initiatives.
  • Facilitate leadership development opportunities and encourage student involvement in campus activities.
  • Develop and assess programs that align with institutional learning outcomes and best practices in student development.
  • Assist with special events such as Orientation, Admitted Students Day, SOAR, Convocation, Commencement, and other campus traditions.

Supervision and Training of Resident Assistants (25%)

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of RAs.
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs focused on leadership development, community building, conflict resolution, and crisis management.
  • Provide mentorship and support to RAs through regular one-on-one and team meetings.
  • Review duty logs and ensure follow-up on incidents and concerns.
  • Promote professional development opportunities for RAs to enhance their
  • leadership skills.
  • Building Management (20%)

  • Serve as the administrative director for the daily operations of three residence halls.
  • Conduct weekly walk-throughs of buildings to identify and address facility issues and foster engagement with residents.
  • Partner with the Associate Director for Administration and Operations to process work orders and ensure timely resolution of maintenance concerns.
  • Collaborate with RAs to create programming schedules and implement curriculum learning opportunities.
  • Establish and communicate residence hall opening and closing procedures based on the academic calendar,
  • Coordinate billing for residence hall damages and ensure accurate room coordination reports.
  • Student Conduct Administration (10%)

  • Serve as an administrative hearing officer, ensuring fair and consistent adjudication of conduct cases.
  • Administer the student conduct process, including assigning charges, administering sanctions, and monitoring competition.
  • Use Maxient to maintain records of conduct cases and provide periodic reports to the Director of Housing and Residence Life.
  • Assist with updates to the Code of Conduct and research best practices related to student discipline.
  • Crisis Management (10%)

  • Participate in the on-call rotation to respond to emergencies and critical incidents in the residence halls.
  • Develop and implement crisis response protocols and ensure staff are adequately trained.
  • Meet with students in crisis, providing support and appropriate referrals to resources such as Campus Safety or Counseling Services.
  • Document incidents and provide timely reports to appropriate departments.
  • Manage housing requests for students experiencing housing insecurity during the break periods.
  • Conflict Resolution (5%)

  • Facilitate roommate contact mediation and document outcomes using appropriate forms or databases.
  • Train RAs and student leaders in mediation and de-escalation techniques.
  • Apply restorative justice principles to resolve conflicts and promote positive relationships between students.
  • Qualifications

    Education

    Master's degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field required.

    Experience

    1-3 years of professional experience in residence life, student development, or a related area. Experience supervising and training RAs, with a focus on leadership development. Knowledge of student development theories, conflict resolution strategies, and crisis management. Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse residential community.

    Skills

    Strong organizational, communication, and multitasking skills; a proven ability to collaborate across departments; a commitment to fostering an inclusive, student-centered environment; and experience in mentorship and student advising.

    Preferred Experience

    Experience with facilities management, student conduct, and residential learning.

    Other Duties

    37.5 hour workweek. Significant evening and weekend work is expected.

    The Associate Director of Residence Life is provided an on-campus apartment to facilitate responding directly to student needs during evenings and weekends.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a commitment to providing exceptional service to students, faculty, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Strong business acumen with experience with budget management; and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, train, and develop a team of graduate and undergraduate staff.
  • Proficiency in database management and computer applications relevant to student engagement.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and best practices related to student development and residence life in higher education settings.
  • Technology Skills

    Proficient in MS Office toots (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail, and the Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications.

    Language Skills

    Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively provide information and positively respond to questions from external and internal customers in person and by phone. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

    Mathematical Skills

    Proficient with statistical and financial concepts. Must be able to apply those concepts to tracking, projections, goal setting, and interpreting reports. Must be able to draw conclusions from reports and make cost-effective decisions regarding programs.

    Reasoning Ability

    Ability to solve practical problems and deal with concrete variables in situations where timed standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work independently and as a member of a group in developing and executing project plans. Ability to work in the theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate.

    Compensation

    This is a position with an annual starting salary range of $43,140 to $47,934 depending on circumstances including an applicant's skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Hood College has provided a compensation range representing its good faith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at the time of posting. The College may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
