Job Mission
- Your primary objective is to efficiently produce detailed and accurate shop drawings and other needed drawings/files clearly reflecting the fabrication approach as determined in collaboration with production team.
The Technical Designer reports to the Director of Production and collaborates with the Project Managers, other Technical Designers, the Shop Manager, the Fabricators and Finishers, the Estimation department, and the Company Director.

- within the estimated time allotted.
- that effectively communicate to our clients exactly what they will be receiving.
- that effectively communicate to our shop exactly what they will be fabricating.
- that effectively communicate to our vendors exactly what we need.
- Help increase shop efficiency by identifying issues during the design phase and before plans go to the shop for production.
Responsibilities
- Create shop drawings, truck pack and crating drawings, installation drawings, and other drawings as needed
- Collaborate with other members of the team to determine project design and build approaches
- Create schematic designs based on client creatives when needed
- Create files for CNC and 3D printer
- Assist with project estimation
- Material and hardware specifying and ordering
- Some vendor coordination and management as needed
- Contribute to the advancement of our standards and capabilities
- Occasional site surveys
- Utilize periods of client project down time to focus efforts on continued process development, personal skills training, FP internal projects, and facilities upgrades
Required experience
- Highly skilled in Solidworks (or equivalent 3D CAD platform and willing to learn Solidworks)
- Ability to create drawings to communicate construction techniques to shop fabricators, external vendors, clients, designers, engineers, and venue officials
- Broad knowledge of materials, means, and methods, including construction techniques in wood, metal, plastics for the scenic, display, exhibit industries, and permanent built environments
- Ability to assist with project estimation
- Proficiency with G-Suite, with good spreadsheet competency
- CNC programming experience
ALSO HELPFUL
- CNC operation experience
- Experience with Fusion360, Mastercam, and Vcarve pro software
- Experience with Rhino
- Experience with 3D modeling
- 3D printing experience
- Knowledge of AutoCAD 2D operations for processing of files for in-house CNC and vendor use
- Versatile and broad CAD platform experience to work with 3D files coming in from clients in other formats
- Experience with logistics and shipping of scenic and display items
