- Reinforces instruction to students with a variety of special academic and behavioral needs;
- Assists with the organization of the classroom environment and preparation, distribution and collection of papers, supplies and materials in a neat and orderly manner;
- Assists teacher with classroom setup, such as bulletin boards and work areas;
- Presents lessons in academic, social/emotional, fine/gross motor, health and behavioral skills and other areas as assigned;
- Assists with student behavior, following classroom rules, behavior plans and approved techniques and strategies;
- Assists teacher with monitoring and reporting of progress regarding student performance and achievement through observation, assessment and daily contact;
- Accompanies and assists students in general education classroom, computer lab, library and other settings as assigned;
- Performs a variety of clerical duties, such as preparing, typing and copying instructional materials, scoring papers (with answer guide) and answering phones;
- Assists with parent/guardian communication via telephone, written communication and translates and interprets as needed;
- Assists with preparing and maintaining student records and files as necessary, to include Individualized Educational Programs paperwork;
- When requested, confers with teachers and support staff concerning Individualized Educational Programs;
- Directs group activities of students to include lunch, recess, playground, field trips and other activities as assigned;
- Accompanies and assists students at community trips, bus stops, offices and other locations as assigned;
- Assist with toileting and training needs of students;
- Assists with self-help skills of students (eating, dressing, and personal hygiene such as toileting, diapering, cleaning and grooming)
- Assists with supervision, assuring the health and safety of students, and implementing specialized physical health care plans (such as catheterization, suctioning, seizure disorders/procedures, tube feeding) as prescribed by a nurse;
- May attend school functions, staff in-service training and other meetings;
- May assist in other classrooms on an emergency basis (S);

- Assist in supervising and disciplining assigned students according to approved policies and procedures;
- Plan and organize work; maintain records and prepare reports; meet schedules and timelines;
- Communicate effectively with students and adults;
- Operate a variety of office equipment such as, but not limited to, computer terminal, typewriter, calculator, telephone, fax, two-way radio and copier;
- Ability to read and write at the level required to perform the duties of this position - print and write legibly;
- Supervise and discipline students according to approved procedures;
- Assist students and staff with various self-help and health procedures;
- Accept and carry out work assignments cooperatively and willingly;
- Work with others effectively, tactfully, courteously and respectfully;
- Must have one of the following:
- Completion of an Associate of Arts (AA) degree;
- 48 units of course work at the college level
- High School Diploma or GED and the successful completion of a comprehensive exam in the areas of reading, math, and written language.
- Successful completion of an exam that assesses the individual’s ability to work with children.
- Previous experience working with children preferable.
- Tuberculosis screening and clearance every four years.
- Must have or is responsible for obtaining standard first aid and CPR within three months of hire date.
