Safety Coordinator Job Summary:
This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the organization’s safety and security programs to ensure a safe and compliant workplace. The Safety Coordinator will work closely with leadership and employees to promote a proactive safety culture, enforce safety regulations, and drive continuous improvement in workplace health and safety.
Safety Coordinator Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and enforce workplace safety policies, procedures, and training programs in collaboration with management.
- Facilitate and coordinate safety initiatives to foster a culture of workplace safety and risk awareness.
- Administer and manage the Safety Management System (SMS), Learning Management System (LMS), and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Management System.
- Continuously evaluate and improve the effectiveness of safety and security programs.
- Assess current safety training programs, providing recommendations for revisions and enhancements.
- Identify and mitigate workplace hazards, reducing injuries, accidents, and health risks.
- Submit recommendations for improvements to emergency preparedness, accident prevention, general safety, and risk management initiatives.
- Enforce safety regulations and stop operations that pose immediate risks to personnel or equipment.
- Communicate environmental and safety information across all levels of the organization.
- Develop and manage the safety and security departmental budget.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, and industry codes (e.g., OSHA, EPA).
- Conduct routine safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments to ensure workplace safety.
- Lead incident investigations, determine root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain accurate recordkeeping and reporting for safety incidents, near misses, and OSHA compliance audits.
- Serve as the primary contact for OSHA, EPA, and other regulatory agencies when required.
- Champion and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives to drive continuous improvement.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Safety Coordinator Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to influence safety culture across the organization.
- In-depth knowledge of safety regulations, OSHA standards, and emergency preparedness.
- Ability to conduct effective safety training and clearly communicate safety protocols.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.
- Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to prioritize and execute tasks efficiently.
Safety Coordinator Education and Experience:
- Associate’s degree in Law Enforcement, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Business Management, or a related field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of safety experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Advanced safety training or relevant certifications (e.g., OSHA 30/OSHA 500, CSP, ASP, CHST, HAZWOPER) preferred.
- Previous experience in administration and/or maintenance of SMS and/or LMS strongly preferred.
