Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Part-Time Surgical Assistant to join our team at Finch Oral & Facial Surgery. As an essential member of our surgical team, you will assist the surgeon during procedures, provide pre- and post-operative care to patients, and ensure the surgical environment is prepared and maintained to the highest standards. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, patient-focused, and passionate about delivering exceptional care. This position is located in the office and not available for remote work.
Key Responsibilities
Surgical Assistance:
- Assist the surgeon during oral and maxillofacial procedures, including extractions, implants, biopsies, and other surgical treatments.
- Conduct anesthesia prep and take various X-rays and scans.
- Assist and prepare for the administration of local anesthesia or intravenous (IV) sedation by the oral surgeon.
- Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field by setting up instruments, equipment, and sterile drapes.
- Monitor and assist with patient sedation or anesthesia under the supervision of the surgeon.
- Provide chairside assistance, anticipating the needs of the surgeon throughout the procedure.
Patient Care:
- Provide excellent care to make patients feel like family.
- Prepare patients for surgery by reviewing medical histories, taking vital signs, and explaining procedures.
- Provide post-operative instructions and ensure patients understand their care plans.
- Support patients during procedures by maintaining a calm and reassuring presence.
- Follow up with patients as directed, ensuring their recovery is progressing as expected.
Instrument and Equipment Management:
- Sterilize and maintain surgical instruments, equipment, and treatment rooms according to OSHA and infection control protocols.
- Monitor inventory of surgical supplies and place orders as needed.
- Ensure all equipment is in working order and report any maintenance needs promptly.
Administrative Support:
- Record accurate patient notes and treatment details in the electronic health record (EHR) system.
- Assist with patient scheduling, referrals, and insurance pre-authorizations as needed.
- Collaborate with the front office team to ensure a seamless patient experience.
- Manage office supply inventory and order supplies as necessary.
- Assist with front desk and administrative tasks as needed, such as scheduling, data entry, or patient check-in/out.
Compliance and Safety:
- Adhere to all HIPAA, OSHA, and office safety protocols to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Stay updated on best practices, techniques, and certifications required for oral surgery assisting.
Qualifications
Education and Certifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- X-ray certification (required).
- Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) or equivalent certification (preferred).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification (required).
- Additional certifications in oral surgery assisting or anesthesia monitoring (a plus).
Experience
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience as a dental or oral surgery assistant (preferred).
- Experience with sedation or anesthesia protocols (a plus).
Skills and Competencies
- Strong knowledge of oral surgery procedures, instruments, and sterilization techniques.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and team members.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Attention to detail and commitment to providing high-quality patient care.
- Proficiency in practice management software and EHR systems (e.g., Dentrix, Eaglesoft, etc.).
- Candidates must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and remain standing for extended periods of up to eight hours. Additionally, the ability to sit, stand, reach, and kneel for prolonged durations is required.
