What are the responsibilities and job description for the Youth Services Assistant position at Findlay-Hancock County Public Library?
Summary
Under direction, the Youth Services Assistant provides reference services to patrons, prepares materials for programs and supports the Youth Services Department with projects as assigned.
Essential Functions

- Processes and checks in new library materials
- Updates the status of materials, as assigned
- Repairs library materials, as assigned
Customer Service
- Provides excellent customer service to all library patrons
- Maintains confidentiality of patron information
- Responds to questions from patrons in person, over the phone and/or virtually
- Directs patrons to library areas, staff, or outside agencies as appropriate
- Assists patrons using library equipment
- Retrieves library materials for patrons
Reference Service
- Provides reference and information services to patrons
- Maintains current knowledge of library collection and popular material
- Recommends appropriate materials to patrons
- Assists patrons in using electronic information sources and the online catalog to located
- Assists patrons in using virtual library services
Teamwork
- Maintains a collaborative working environment
- Provides support to department projects, as needed
- Attends meetings and serves on staff committees, as requested
- Supports library-wide initiatives, such as SummerREAD
Miscellaneous
- Records statistics for library transactions, as required
- Maintains and increases knowledge and skills through professional development
- Represents the library at community events, as assigned
Performs additional duties and assignments, as required
Physical and Environmental Factors
The incumbent may be exposed to:
Physical: Frequent walking, sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and pushing carts. Moving/lifting up to 30 pounds, pushing up to 70 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
Environmental: Typical office setting with no extreme temperatures or fumes. Minimal, if any, exposure to hazardous materials. Exposure to dust
Minimum Requirements
Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience: One (1) to three (3) years of customer service experience is preferred.
Helpful Skills and Abilities: Effective verbal and interpersonal skills to respond to coworkers, supervisor, and patrons. Organization, prioritizing and coordinating multiple tasks. Basic communication skills. Basic computer skills.
Incumbent may be required to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends.
