What you will do:
- Follows proper specimen/patient identification process in the execution of all job duties.
- Process cytology specimens according to policies
- Assists pathologists/pathologists’ assistant in examining tissue for grossing and frozen section pieces. Assists with fine needle aspiration, bone marrows and EBUS procedures.
- File pathology slides and blocks.
- Demonstrates competency to assist pathologists/pathologist assistants with Frozen Section slide cutting and staining.
- Assures tissue processors are maintained, loaded and run daily.
- Perform clerical duties to include short registration, order entry, scanning, and filing orders for patients and specimens. Investigates and resolves order/specimen problems.
- Perform specimen retrieval runs for pathology department. Assist with accessioning pathology cases.
- Perform all required specimen send-outs.
- Assists with daily billing activities for pathology.
- Dispose of biohazardous materials.
- Record daily maintenance/temperature checks.
- Responsible for inventory in the gross room and histology, to include putting up supplies, rotating stock, and alerting appropriate team members of the need to order supplies.
- Initiates assistance to others on the team as workload permits.
- Keeps current with changes in laboratory procedures.
- Completes daily assignments within assigned shift.
- Demonstrates excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks.
- Handles unexpected situations and is able to exercise independent thought and action.
- Observes HIPAA laws regarding patient information. Does not discuss confidential information with co-workers outside the requirements of daily work.
- Participates in department performance improvement activities as assigned and attends required training.
- Assist the Laboratory Secretary and Technical Lab Assistants as needed.
- Demonstrates Service Excellence and ACE.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
What you will need:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate or Bachelor degree in Science or related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 1 year of histology or general lab experience and/or healthcare experience required.
- Must have basic clerical skills, such as typing, filing, medical terminology, computer literate.
- Previous histology or general lab experience and/or medical background preferred.
- Ability to lift objects up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
- Punctual attendance at assigned work location is required.
- Ability to work in a safe and efficient manner and maintain an accident free work place, including ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of emergency codes.
- Ability to comply with OSHA regulations and CDC standard and transmission-based precaution recommendations and to utilize proper personal protective equipment.
- Ability to comply with provisions of applicable S.D.S. forms.
- Successful completion of a 90-day probationary period.
