The Street Paint Marking Journeyman is responsible for operating, maintaining, and applying thermoplastic and paint markings on streets, roadways, and other surfaces. This role requires expertise in preparing surfaces, handling thermoplastic and paint melters, and ensuring that all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with specifications and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Application of Street Markings:
- Operate thermoplastic and paint melters for applying pavement markings, including lines, arrows, symbols, and other designs as specified in project plans.
- Prepare and apply thermoplastic materials, ensuring consistent quality and thickness.
- Use airless paint sprayers and other equipment to apply paint markings.
- Adjust and calibrate equipment to maintain consistent application standards.
- Surface Preparation:
- Clean and prepare surfaces using appropriate techniques (sweeping, pressure washing, etc.) to ensure proper adhesion of markings.
- Measure and layout work areas accurately based on project requirements and design plans.
- Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
- Operate and maintain thermoplastic and paint melting equipment safely and effectively.
- Perform daily maintenance checks and minor repairs on all equipment, ensuring proper working condition.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or necessary repairs to the supervisor promptly.
- Quality Assurance:
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with project specifications, traffic safety standards, and local regulations.
- Make necessary adjustments or corrections to ensure high-quality results.
- Safety Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Set up and manage traffic control devices (e.g., cones, barricades) to ensure a safe work environment for the crew and the public.
- Be aware of surroundings and alert team members of any hazards or safety concerns.
- Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
- Submit daily work logs and any required documentation to the supervisor.
Qualifications
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in pavement marking, thermoplastic application, or a related field.
- Certifications: Certification in thermoplastic application (preferred but not required). Traffic Control Certification is a plus.
- Knowledge & Skills:
- Proficient in the use of thermoplastic and paint melting equipment.
- Familiarity with traffic safety standards and proper pavement marking techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and diagrams.
- Basic understanding of math for layout and spacing measurements.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment/materials (up to 50 lbs).
- Requires standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends, as needed for project completion.
Work Environment
- The position requires working in high-traffic areas and construction zones.
- Must be comfortable with working around heavy machinery and in conditions where safety precautions are critical.
