Responsible for working with the Laboratory Director and the CLIA License holders to ensure that CLIA and Accreditation standards are being met through overall operation, leadership, direction, and administration of laboratory services provided by Community Health Services (CHS); this includes but is not limited to the waived testing performed by clinics and grant programs. Performs laboratory testing at all levels.

Key Essentials Functions And Accountabilities Of The Job

  • Works with the Laboratory Director and the CLIA License holder to: Ensures testing systems provide quality laboratory services for pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of testing. Ensures test methods selected have the capability of providing quality results. Ensures verification procedures used are adequate to determine accuracy, precision, and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method. Ensures that reports of test results include pertinent information required for interpretation. Ensures that an approved procedure manual is available to all personnel. Ensures that consultation is available to the laboratorys clients on matters relating to the quality of test results reported and their interpretation concerning specific patient conditions. Ensures that laboratory personnel are performing the test methods as required for accurate and reliable results
  • Assists with the training and oversight of personnel and processes Properly supervises, and accurately performs tests and reports results. Ensures that, prior to testing patient specimens, all personnel have the appropriate education and experience and receive the appropriate training for the type and complexity of services offered and have demonstrated that they can perform all testing operations reliably to provide and report accurate results. Ensures that policies and procedures are established for monitoring individuals who conduct pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic phases of testing to verify that they maintain competency to process specimens, perform test procedures, report test results promptly and proficiently, and whenever necessary, identify needs for remedial training or continuing education to improve skills Develops documentation for each assigned individual that specifies the level of activity each is authorized to perform; whether supervision is required for specimen processing, test performance, or results reporting; and whether consultant review is required prior to reporting patient test results.
  • Under minimal supervision, provides a full range of sample test analyses and laboratory services. Shift work and night and weekend call may be required to provide 24-hour laboratory coverage. Performs all levels of testing including CLIA defined high complexity testing. Works with infants, children, adolescents, adults and geriatric patients
  • Provides quality control oversight Ensures that quality control and quality assessment programs are established and maintained to identify failures in quality as they occur. Ensures the establishment and maintenance of acceptable levels of analytical performance for each test system. Ensures that remedial actions are taken and documented whenever significant deviations from the laboratorys established performance characteristics are identified. Patient test results are only reported when the system is functioning properly
  • Analyzes and reports historical data and trends as requested
  • Completes special projects as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This position does require supervisory responsibilities.

Education, Certifications, And Licenses Required

  • Bachelors degree and MLS certification with a minimum of 2 years lab training and experience
  • Associates degree and MLT certification with a minimum of 5 years lab training and experience - required
  • ASCP or equivalent certification required
  • High school diploma or GED

Experience Required

  • Two to five years of experience of work in a laboratory - required

Knowledge of

  • Comprehensive knowledge of accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Considerable professional knowledge of laboratory principles.
  • Knowledgeable in management principles.
  • Knowledge of all levels of laboratory testing including CLIA defined high complexity testing

Skills In

  • Good analytical skills.
  • Good management skills.
  • Communication skills that allow effective relationships with people at all levels of the organization

Ability to

  • Interpret laboratory reports and quality control results for accuracy and to trouble shoot problem.
  • Perform patient specimen testing and ensure sample suitability with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Work independently to assess the validity of lab results before release to providers.

Travel Required

Less than 10% travel expected.
