SCOPE OF POSITION
The Director of Music shall be committed to Jesus Christ and to the mission and music ministry of First Lutheran Church (FLC). The primary responsibility of the Director of Music is to nourish and grow the music ministry at FLC and empower musicians from both inside and outside the congregation to utilize their gifts. The Director of Music will have strong interpersonal and relational skills for working with people of all ages, along with strong organizational, administrative, and instrumental skills.
MINISTRY SUPERVISOR
The Lead Pastor is the primary supervisor of the Director of Music.
POSITION TYPE
The Director of Music is a salaried part-time position. This position calls for a commitment of fifteen to twenty (15 - 20) hours per week. This commitment includes practice time, office hours, staff meetings, and worship service hours.

QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will:
1. have a Christian background and an appreciation and understanding of the Lutheran worship tradition.
2. be an accomplished organist who excels in leading Lutheran worship.
3. have sufficient piano/keyboard skills to help with FLC's contemporary music ensemble, if needed.
4. have leadership and communication skills.
5. be a self-motivated individual with good organizational and planning skills.
6. be able to create enthusiasm for the music program.
7. possess a caring attitude.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will:
- be the principal organist at FLC, director of the Chancel choir,* and the Handbell choir.* (*If the position is vacant.)
- aid the pastor, choir director(s) and other worship coordinators in administering, planning and implementing a quality music program at FLC.
- provide appropriate organ music for all regularly scheduled Sunday services at FLC to include but not limited to: Advent services, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Lenten services, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter.
- encourage and promote congregational participation in the church service with strong and effective accompaniments to hymns and liturgy.
- prepare all choirs under his/her direction to perform appropriate anthems regularly to the best of their ability.
- plan special music for summer services when choir season is over.
- secure musicians and soloists for special services, encourage the musical talents and participation of members of the congregation through organizing and coordinating special musical offerings, including soloists, instrumentalists, and small ensembles.
- monitor the condition of all FLC musical instruments, arrange for the tuning, maintenance, and servicing by a qualified technician as needed.
- arrange for a qualified substitute organist/pianist when absent from worship services.
- write/post appropriate articles on church music or related topics when needed for FLC bulletins, newsletters, and social media platforms.
- serve as adviser/resource person for church boards as needed.
- be directly responsible to the lead pastor and personnel board.
- if available, provide music for weddings and funerals. (Fees for these services will be negotiated separately.)
- support and work with Cross Current contemporary worship.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $23,000.00 - $24,000.00 per year
