What are the responsibilities and job description for the Receptionist position at First Lutheran Church?
The Receptionist is the face of First Lutheran, as the receptionist is the first person the members and visitors see when entering the church during the week. The receptionist should be pleasant, professional, and helpful to anyone who enters the church. Kindness and respect are essential in the handling of the variety of people who enter First Lutheran. The receptionist directs parishioners and guests to the appropriate event location.
Essential Functions
- Answers the phone and directs calls to the appropriate staff or answers the question if the answer is known
- Greets every member or guest who enters the church
- Directs parishioners and guests to the appropriate event location
- Handles the church calendar; provides the week in review at the staff meetings
- Handles all the leased parking lots; maintains a spreadsheet and a binder containing all the forms and essential information; works to create a good relationship with each company that leases parking spaces
- Calls the hospital each morning to check if any FLC members are in the hospital and updates the hospital report
- Records basic hospital notes in a database
- Views obituaries online to determine if the deceased is a member or if any of the immediate family are members of FLC; notifies the Director of Communications and Technology to add to the church's prayers any deceased member or any family member who has lost a loved one.
- Retrieves from each of the photocopiers the monthly copier report
- Contacts the staff member who receives a package at the reception desk
- Collects the card money for the quilters, puts the money into an envelope and puts the envelope in the Finance Office drop box
- Contacts Church on the Street when the donation box is full and to pick up their mail
- Contacts Project CAR to pick up their mail
- Oversees Hy-Vee gift cards; records purchases of Hy-Vee gift cards and attaches the cash or check to the sheet for that individual
- Counts the Hy-Vee cards on Monday morning and sends the count to the Director of Church Finance and Administration and the Finance Office
- Completes other duties as assigned

Requirements
- Considerable experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
- Positive attitude
- Competent communication skills
- Good phone skills
- Able to multi-task
- Willingness to learn, including simple database usage
