Job Summary:
First Parish in Milton, Unitarian Universalist is a vibrant, engaged, civic-minded congregation seeking a full-time Director of Lifespan Faith Exploration to co-create and lead opportunities for spiritual growth. The role is centered on children, youth, and families. As such, the Director will be responsible for building up a cornerstone of the congregation. The role also extends into multiple areas of church life as a guide for faith exploration and living one’s faith across all ages. Areas of Responsibility:
Children, Youth, and Families
• Collaborate with the Religious Exploration (RE) Committee on strategic planning as it relates to faith development and community building among children, youth, and families
• Attend monthly meetings of the RE and Parish Committees, as well as other Committee meetings as needed
• Select and revise, as well as innovatively develop and design, curricula for children and youth, inclusive of alternate year offerings of:
o Our Whole Lives
o Coming of Age
• Lead the delivery of that curricula, including:
o Availability to teach sections of the program
o Recruit, train, support, and coordinate volunteers
o Hire, train, and supervise program assistants and nursery staff
• Foster youth faith exploration in conjunction with curricula, through youth group(s), and via community- & service-based experiences
• Plan, manage, and execute periodic activities and seasonal events with appeal to families, mutigenerational interaction, and community outreach
• Plan, manage, and execute a one-week Unitarian Universalist summer camp at First Parish in Milton
• Acquire and prepare (in cooperation with the church administrator, program assistants, and volunteers) materials, equipment, and church spaces for use when delivering curricula, activities, and events
• Manage (in cooperation with the church administrator) a budget and other administrative tasks related to faith exploration programming
• Regularly communicate about programming with volunteers, church families, the full congregation, and the broader community
• Greet and follow up with families new to the congregation
• Adhere to the First Parish in Milton Code of Professional Practice
Faith Exploration and Living One’s Faith Across All Ages
• Prepare and coordinate the delivery of worship-themed stories and messages to the full congregation during the Sunday worship service
• Periodically co-design (with Minister) and then lead entire worship services for the full congregation
• The Director may select from the below areas of work, as time permits:
o Create, offer, and facilitate multigenerational and adult-focused faith exploration programming
o Lead or assist with ongoing congregational endeavors:
Social and environmental justice activism
Strategic growth of congregational membership
Coordinating outreach to congregational members in order to maintain their sense of belonging
Communicating about church life to the broader community
Interfaith collaborations
Applicant Competencies:
Required Competencies
• Aligned with Unitarian Universalist values
• Demonstrated experience developing and executing innovative curriculum
• Significant relevant training and/or relevant experience working with educational programming, particularly programming geared toward children and youth
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, as well as solid interpersonal skills
• Experience working both independently and in close communication with teams and organizational leadership
• Experience with assisting in administrative tasks, including familiarity with standard digital technologies
• Competent with communication technology and applications, such as social media and publishing applications
Desired Competencies (existing or willing to develop)
• Demonstrated experience (co-)leading worship service
• Demonstrated experience promoting equity for and inclusivity of individuals who identify with diverse communities and cultures
• Demonstrated experience leading or facilitating summer camp programming
• Completed or working toward Religious Education credentials with the UUA
• Completion of Our Whole Lives facilitator training and experience with leading OWL with youth
• Experience with leading Coming of Age with youth

Congregation Description

Placement within Organization
The Director reports to the Minister. The Director will attend the Parish Committee monthly meetings to provide a written and oral account of their work. The Director will be a partner to both the Minister and the RE committee. The Director will lead an experienced group of RE volunteers who are ready to engage in the programming for children and youth. The Director also will collaborate with exceptionally competent church staff and manage the part-time RE assistants (youth staff).
Time and On-site Commitments
The Director position is full time (40 hours per week), and it will start by July, 2025. As a regular presence in worship, curricular programming, and social hour, the Director will be at church on Sundays from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM from September through mid-June, with occasional Sundays off. Attendance at staff meetings is required. The days and times of additional weekly hours may be flexible, and this includes opportunities for remote hours.
Other Requirements
In keeping with Safe Congregations Guidelines, a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check will be administered annually.
Compensation Package
• Commensurate with UUA guidelines, the salary range for the role is $65,000 - $69,000 as well as benefit opportunities and paid vacation.
• The role will have an annual budget of four (4) weeks and $5,000 for professional development, professional care, and all other professional expenses.
