Job Summary
The Sexton (Custodian / Facilities Assistant) supports the daily care and upkeep of First Parish’s historic building in downtown Portland. This position plays a vital role in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming space for worship, meetings, and community use. The Sexton works both independently and in collaboration with staff and the lay-led Buildings & Grounds Committee. This is a part-time, in-person position starting mid-April 2025.
Essential Functions
- Perform regular janitorial tasks, including:
- Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors
- Cleaning and restocking restrooms
- Taking out trash and recycling
- Dusting and general tidying of public areas
- Conduct seasonal outdoor upkeep (e.g., snow removal, clearing walkways)
- Perform light maintenance and small repairs, and report larger facility issues
- Set up and break down furniture and equipment for Sunday services and other events (as directed)
- Monitor and track cleaning and maintenance supplies
- Communicate clearly with staff and the Buildings & Grounds Committee on tasks, timelines, and progress
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience with custodial, janitorial, or basic maintenance work preferred
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Clear and respectful communicator, comfortable working with diverse groups of people
- Reliable and detail-oriented, with pride in maintaining shared community spaces
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 55 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation
- Must be able to move around the building, climb stairs, and perform physical tasks regularly throughout the shift
- Must be able to use standard cleaning equipment and tools safely and effectively
