Position Title: Director of Student Ministries
Purpose of the Position: The Director of Student Ministries will help build the body of Christ at First Presbyterian Church by building a youth and college ministry program that supports the vision and mission of First Presbyterian Church. The position serves middle and high school and college students, both in the membership of the congregation and the greater community. The Student Ministry Director will recruit, lead, train, counsel, and encourage these groups and their leaders, with an understanding that youth ministry includes worship, education, spiritual development, evangelism, missions, fellowship, affirmation of youth and college students, and support for their families.
Designation of Exempt or Non-exempt: Exempt
Anticipated Days and Hours Worked: Full-time with benefits as outlined in the church policy manual.
Supervisor’s Title: The Director of Student Ministries reports to the Pastor/Head of Staff.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A deep and growing love for, faith in, and relationship with, Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
- An affirmation of acceptance of belief in the ECO Essential Tenets.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; a degree major or minor in youth and college ministry, Christian education, or similar is especially welcomed.
- A working knowledge and commitment to continued study of the Scriptures.
- A minimum of 10 years of active ministry (paid or volunteer).
- An ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
- A commitment to worship and participation in the life of the First Presbyterian family of faith.
- An ability to work collaboratively with others in an encouraging manner.
Job Duties:
- Subordinate to The Great Commandment, give active and loyal support to First Presbyterian Church, its philosophies and objectives, and to abide by all church regulations and policies as stated in the ECO Policies and Procedures Handbook.
- Recognize the flexible nature of a church position and be prepared to do duties as assigned.
- Through working relationships with the Pastors, Youth and other appropriate committees, and the Session, contribute advice and assistance to determine and maintain a youth and college program commensurate with the needs of the church.
- Collaborate with the Youth Committee to recommend curriculum and recruit leaders to facilitate Sunday Morning Sunday School Classes, Sunday evenings for youth, and other weekly programming in conjunction with the Youth Ministry Director leading classes for each of these programs.
- Collaborate with the appropriate committee to recruit leaders to facilitate weekly programming for college students.
- Use curriculum approved by the Youth Committee to lead Sunday School, Sunday evening, and other weekly meetings.
- Plan and communicate events on a youth and college student calendar updated bi-annually for youth to meet their spiritual development and discipleship needs. This includes but is not limited to missions, outreach, and trips.
- Build relationships with middle school, high school, and college students to strengthen self-esteem and encourage them to become established as Christian believers.
- Make calls and visits with youth and college students during times of need or significant moments.
- Attend student activities to facilitate building relationships with students.
- Attend committee meetings as needed if involving youth and college students of FPC.
- Recommend and assist in preparation of the annual youth and college ministry budget and be a good steward with budgeted fiscal and other resources.
- Oversee the care of equipment that pertains to youth and college ministry.
- Provide counsel to youth and their families as needed.
- Use social media for the benefit of youth and college ministries.
- Attend ECO/Christian trainings, classes and conferences.
- All other duties as assigned by the Pastor and Youth Committee.
Behavioral Expectations: All paid staff of First Presbyterian Church are expected to conduct themselves at all times in a Christ-centered manner. In addition, all staff are expected to perform their work for the Glory of God as directed in Colossians 3: 23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”
