ESSENTIAL ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Surgical Technologist is responsible for preparing the operating room and sterile field for surgical procedures by ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely; by preparing sterile supplies, instruments, and equipment using sterile technique; anticipating the needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how they relate to the surgical patient and the patient’s procedure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Performs responsibilities for preparing the operating room and sterile field for surgical procedures and anticipating the needs of the OR surgical team.
Demonstrates knowledge of the surgical procedure performed and sets up instruments and equipment using sterile technique.
Refers to physician preference cards for special needs, instruments and equipment in a proactive manner.
Assures surgical equipment, instruments and supplies available and in working order prior to start of procedure.
Assists with counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments with the registered nurse circulator.
Performs the following at the sterile field: passes supplies, equipment, or instruments; sponges and suctions operative site; prepares and cuts suture; transfers and pours irrigation fluids; transfers but does not administer drugs; handles specimens; holds retractors and other instruments; applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders; connects drains to suction; applies dressings to closed wounds.
Anticipates needs of the surgical team based on knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology and how they relate to the procedure.
Maintains a sterile field at all times.
Assists the surgeon in positioning the patient.
Assists in correctly applying sterile drapes.
Assists the surgical team with cleaning the operating room on completion of surgery.
Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization on completion of surgery.
Assists in maintaining sterilization logs.
Demonstrates correct use of washers and sterilizers.
Performs sterilization of equipment according to AORN, AAMI other regulatory bodies, and manufacturer standards.
Restocks inventory daily or as needed following cases.
Returns or discards any unused supplies after case(s).
Returns equipment to storage areas.
Ensures safe care to patients, adhering to policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications, including time management, supply management, productivity, and accuracy of practice
Performs other duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High school diploma required. Graduate of a program for surgical technology preferred.
Experience: 1-3 years experience in a surgical setting required. Spine and Ortho experience is required.
License/Certifications: Current Surgical Tech Certification is required or in Texas: Required to meet the H.B. 643 criteria. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
