POSITION DESCRIPTION
First United Methodist Preschool provides quality care and education in a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment. We are located in Murfreesboro, TN. Our program serves children from 12 months old to age 5. We are a 3 Star Licensed school by the Tennessee Department of Human Services. Our school encourages partnerships with parents/child’s caregivers to engage and encourage parent participation in our program.
The Assistant Preschool Teacher assists the Lead Teacher with teaching, supervision, and management of a class of children.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least two years’ experience working with children
- High school diploma (TECTA preferred)
- CPR and First Aid certified or obtain certification upon hire
- Complete a physical and provide physician’s documentation
- Submit to various background checks
- Be willing to teach Methodist/Christian theology

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Follow all guidelines, rules, and regulations required by the State of Tennessee (e.g., DHS) and all policies of the First United Methodist Preschool and First United Methodist Church, Murfreesboro
- Complete 24 hours of training during the academic term (e.g., CRP, First Aid and other early childhood training)
- Maintain ITERS and/or ECERS standards at all times
- Perform a daily health check of each child in the classroom
- Appropriately supervise children
- Assist the lead teacher in implementing curriculum and planning daily activities
- Take over class when lead teacher is absent
- Help facilitate children’s engagement in activities that are developmentally appropriate for preschoolers
- Create and maintain an environment that is clean, organized, and safe for children (e.g., bathroom, tables, toys, etc.)
- Assist children with activities of daily life (e.g., diapering/restroom use, feeding, hygiene)
- Use appropriate children behavior management techniques
- Establish a professional level of rapport with each family
- Other duties as approved by Director
REQUIRED EXPECTATIONS
Physical Demands:
- Should be able to hold light objects such as demonstration materials up to twenty pounds.
- Should be able to move equipment and pick up children up to fifty pounds.
- Speak and hear
- Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception along with the ability to focus vision
- Communicate effectively in English, using proper grammar and vocabulary
- Reach with hands and arms and ugse hands and fingers to handle objects and operate tools, computers, and/or controls.
- Should be able to kneel, squat, stoop, and bend from the waist frequently and sit, stand and walk for required periods of time.
- Should be able to manipulate the building such as stairs and tight spaces to guide children.
Environmental Demands:
- Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses
- Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions
- Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities.
- Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning, instruction, and/or operation of equipment
- Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.
Mental demands:
- Should recognize different learning needs, styles, and capabilities of children.
- Should be familiar with appropriate language and activities for all ages of children.
- Should be able to facilitate and develop spiritual growth, self-esteem, respect, trust, and other positive characteristics.
- Should be able to maintain high energy and display enthusiasm.
- Should be able to handle disruptive and non-compliant behavior in children and adults.
- Should have an established sense of fairness when evaluating children / their home-life / family dynamics avoiding bias and labeling.
- Should be non-critical and non-judgmental with ability to reason objectively.
- Tolerant and open to feedback from peers, parents, and administration.

Immediate Supervisor:
Assistant Teachers are under the supervision of the Lead Teacher in the classroom and report directly to the Preschool Director.
